That Morricone piece sounded an awful lot like Ligeti. Wonder whether it was composed after 2001 came out... Liked it anyway; nice call.

Only listened to WFMU on a radio once when driving through the NY area. Many years ago
Avatar 3:42pm
TDK60:

Yes Fab, at home I usually listen via old-fashioned radio! But recently, an adjacent station at 90.9 FM has been interfering. I live in Washington Heights, Manhattan.

Terrestrial listener always! Got you nice and clear in upper manhattan, and on my latest thrift store (1975 Pioneer) receiver, I am getting FMU in stereo for the first time ever!

Fabio, I'm streaming through excellent ancient speakers.

@TDK60, that's a pirate, probably from the Bronx. Have you submitted a complaint to the FCC? (Sorry if I'm repeating myself.) Hardly anybody ever does this because nobody understand what is or isn't a pirate or licensed or whatever. I'm not against 'em... as long as they don't mess w/WFMU! As soon as they come after WFMU's airspace, the gig is up! Give the bastards no quarter!

still have a little analog AM/FM radio but have never been able to get wfmu on it over here in Brooklyn (Greenpoint).

Haven't liked the stations much here in Prague, it's mostly generic pop music (but in Czech!)

It's a treat to hear FMU over the air when I'm up that way.

fmu reception always been so bad
(I started listening right around time Fabio started being on)
except for in my grandparents' basement in madison (now live in jc, still mostly stream)
listening now on m79 bus through app
Avatar 3:47pm
TDK60:

Thanks Ike, may do that. Even though I'm not against pirates generally.
Avatar 3:53pm
ⓘⓚⓔ:

FMU has no other defense. Of course, if anti-govt. types keep getting elected and destroying govt. from within, while radio equipment keeps getting cheaper and pirates keep popping up, maybe we will end up in a wild west libertarian radio dystopia, and legit stations will have to pool resources & hire mafia types or thugs to go out w/baseball bats & find pirates' transmitters, etc. Scary.

Like this Min Bul a lot, whoever they are.

I can get fmu in east new york but its real fuzzy, listening on laptop, when i'm in the kitchen or in the car its on the radio radio radio yo
Avatar 4:10pm
ɨkɛ:

There are now localized 90.9 & 91.3 pirates interfering w/FMU separately in the Bronx, Queens, southern Brooklyn, Elizabeth/southern Newark, and possibly also Paterson. That's 9 or 10 different pirates.
  4:16pm
Anonymous Coward:

Masers blow up pirates real good...
  4:21pm
Grumpy:

Having no internet machine, I called a friend on my corded phone to ask them to use their computer to send this. I listen to WFMU on what you call old fashioned devices, both in my home and in my 20 year old car when I drive upstate to the Catskills. I am not happy that WFMU does not seem committed to maintaining its airwaves.
Avatar 4:23pm
steve:

Ike, I was just reading about how AM and FM radio works the other day, and was wondering... can one legally form their own pirate station and rebroadcast WFMU over the pirates?
  4:29pm
Anonymous Coward:

@seve: No. FMU could repeat its signal (it already does so), but you need a broadcast license to do it.

The opening scene of the doc, where Baker performs "Almost Blue", is beautiful and harrowing. He is so regal, and so damaged.

The degree to which the things he went through were reflected in his appearance is worth mentioning only to the extent that he plainly rose above it.
