Richie Havens. Wow. There's a story. Last time I saw Richie I was playing trombone for John Gary on his Goodbye Yellow Bird Tour (circa '79) at the Showboat Dinner Theater in Largo, Florida. I was pulling on my pants (banana yellow polyester flairs, as I recall) when Richie walked in the dressing room. I said hello, but he didn't respond. He had a faraway look in his eye. Suddenly, he pulls his guitar from its case and he says, "Play along with me. Norwegian Wood in A." Quietly we ran through the famous Beatles number a couple of times, then Richie said thanks and he was gone. During the second show, Mr. Gary introduced a special guest ... Richie Havens. Applause was weak as Richie took the stage. The crowd was mostly older folks and retirees. Not the type of people who would have been familiar with Richie's performance at Woodstock and his rousing version of "Freedom." Someone threw a napkin at him and Richie just laughed. Another person launched a fistful of plastic forks at Richie from the balcony and, again, Richie just chuckled. Then Richie sang Norwegian Wood and the mood in the room shifted dramatically. People were smiling, some were crying, some held menus towards Richie from the stage apron, hoping for an autograph. Mr. Gary was backstage at this point, finishing his chicken sandwich. I walked back there told him how wonderful Richie had been and how the crowd loved him. Mr. Gary just shrugged. "C'mon, he said, "let's do Yellow Bird and get out of here."

@RevRab, yes he did. I just finished his new autobiography, and he listed every instrument he used on Good Vibrations, Heroes and Villains, God Only Knows and Wouldn't It Be Nice. He used harpsichords, foot-pump organs, and a clavioline on all of the above, along with DOZENS of traditional instruments, often doubled up.

i guess i have to go back and hear the whole interview, but it seems to me that an instrument that was just a variation on the ondes martenet is actually less versatile than the original. maybe i need more examples but it makes me wonder why the less interesting ondioline was created.
...easier to play maybe?

This show made me think of Valjean's version of Bonanza and of Friedrich Trautwein's Trautonium, which I heard on an Oscar Sala - Balanchine Opera record called Electronic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trautonium

Alison Porchnik:

Odd idea, that you'd need a visa to go to outer space. What consulate would you go to?
Avatar 5:44pm
Carmichael:

@coel, straight from Wikipedia: "However, the Ondioline's sounds possibilities were much more varied, compared to the Ondes Martenot, which could only produce a few variations of sounds. This was due to the Ondioline's filter bank, which featured an array of 15 slider switches for various tones. Selected combinations of these switches could create sounds ranging from near-accurate recreations of symphonic instruments (oboe, French horn, etc.) to totally unique sounds of its own."

Whatever consulate that would be, it would be in San Francisco.
