This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

A Bee Gees show, how exciting! Unfortunately I'll have to duck out for an hour at some point, but, archives later.

Feeling great, you actually opened my eyes to early Bee Gees a while back with Sweet Song of Summer

such a sad coke jingle! everything is bittersweet with these boys, i can't get enough of it
Avatar 7:13pm
Flash Strap:

same here, Bob. I couldn't get into at first, and it was a real moment of just deciding to listen to it until it clicked, which it did of course
Avatar 7:14pm
Flash Strap:

the saddest coke jingle imaginable. coke brings momentary pleasure to an agonized life – and that's the best we can hope for
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm

I love what you just said about BeeGees vs. Rothko.

@Evan I couldn't resist the cover though

I love that it's Robin doing the Gregorian parts
Avatar 7:32pm

also, the harmonies on the chorus are just INSANE
Avatar 7:33pm

ALSO, huge mellotron sounds on this album. One of the ultimate mellotron LPs
Avatar 7:35pm

I've only heard the band Catherine's (90s indie/grunge on TVT recs) of Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You. It's actually rather decent.

Hi NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm

To Love Somebody is such a great song.
Avatar 7:37pm
Flash Strap:

one of the best. Nina Simone's version is even better than this one, but only barely (which is amazing in and of itself)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm

I heard the Nina Simone version first. I love that one too.

This song is hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm

They sound really different here. For a minute I thought the show was down and we'd switched over to the GTDR stream.
Avatar 7:48pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, they're like 14 or something there, and really going for an Everly Brothers sound. Their early stuff is all over the place
Avatar 7:48pm
ndbob:

I remember when Bee Gees First came out there was some controversy when Richard Goldstein in the NY Times said it was better than Sgt. Pepper
Avatar 7:51pm
Flash Strap:

there's nothing on it as good or brilliant as Day in the Life, but I think it's sort of a better album, myself. Sort of
Avatar 7:53pm

@Evan I think it holds up a lot better overall

I don't have that Nina Simone album, but I think those songs are all on a compilation I have that also includes a great version of Randy Newman's I Think It's Gonna Rain Today.

weirdly enough the first version of I Think It's Gonna Rain Today was by Julius LaRosa

i'm not too well versed in this early Bee Gees stuff. the gf has a bunch of these records, but i've never really delved into them that much. as a rock child of the late seventies/early eighties, i mostly had bad Bee Gees vibes that kept me away from them for years...

Avatar 8:51pm
northguineahills:

@Hyde: I myself never considered the Bee Gees until the last few years, as I always associated them w/ corporate disco, but even then I dug the vocals.... That said, I always found Robin Gibb's "Worse Girl In Town" remind me of 2005ish Animal Collective for some reason...
Avatar 8:54pm
Flash Strap:

yeah, it completely baffles me how we've got cultural amnesia about the Bee Gees' first decade of music... but they were a total revelation to me at a certain point, and it was like, whoa why did no one tell me about this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
Little Danny:

Goddamn I love the Bee Gees
Avatar 8:55pm

I mean, they were totally competitive to the Beatles and Stones. They were huge

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm

Actually, I had a roommate who was really into this period of the Beegees and played them a lot, but unfortunately, I wasn't into pop music back then (right after college).
Avatar 9:09pm
Flash Strap:

it's so nice to have a good vinyl copy of it, since it's all in velvet, but I have always found them to be a little muddy and usually prefer to listen to my digital copies (remastered, inevitably)

some later LP pressings have neither the velvet nor the full tracklist, so beware

Key line in this song is "I declared war on Spain"
