hello~ why do i love this Mick Rossi piece so much? is it the soundtrack for the Liquid Sky sequel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:08pm
Irwin:

New album by Mick. The entire album is like this, thoroughly wonderful. He plays everything. He's a longtime member of Philip Glass's ensembles.

LL: Also, the album did start out as a soundtrack for a doc film, but it developed and expanded to become a standalone recording.

Chrome / Albi No. 1 : Great sound! Turned it up loud!
Avatar 3:11pm

really does seem perfect for a sort of super-stylish dystopian punk sci-fi parable like LS! ~ wonder what that doc was about?

Because we're having a SILENT fundraiser (as we do every October), I'll be issuing appeals to your generosity here on the comments forum. See that Pledge Widget atop the playlist? Hit it and donate anything. It all goes into the WFMU slush fund for necessary expenses (NOT DJ salaries; we're volunteers).

All month, Linda. I'm waiting for a paycheck myself.

Irwin:

Scientists at SONY CSL Research Lab have created the first-ever entire songs composed by Artificial Intelligence: "Daddy's Car" and "Mister Shadow." The researchers have developed FlowMachines, a system that learns music styles from a huge database of songs. Exploiting unique combinations of style transfer, optimization and interaction techniques, FlowMachines composes novel songs in many styles. "Daddy's Car" is composed in the style of The Beatles. French composer Benoît Carré arranged and produced the songs, and wrote the lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm

It's catchy! I could dance to it. Speaking of, Dick Clark was in my dream last night.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm
Webhamster Henry:

This is really not bad for an artificially intelligent song. But far from the "first". Algorithmic song composition has been in effect for decades. There's even one for a Geniac toy computer of the late 50s.
Avatar 3:48pm
Grok-o-matic:

Dang it, I take my headphones of for a few minutes and miss R. Stevie Moore and Flow Machines. Life ain't worth no more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm
Webhamster Henry:

It's not even the first one to learn from other songs. But, let a million flowers bloom! I just don't like the word "first".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm
Irwin:

AI has been used to compose music for decades (see: Raymond Scott), but I don't know about pop tunes in this manner. It could pass for something on the Merge label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm
Webhamster Henry:

Exactly, you of all people should know about Raymond Scott's attempts to put himself out of business! But for example, David Cope's algorithmically generated Mozart has been around for about 20 years.

My friend Doug Skinner used to hollow out Gideon bibles and put things like rubber monkeys in them or rig them so music came out when opened -- and then swap them out in motel rooms.
