Apropos of Hermione/potato/tomato: A colleague of Stanley Fish had been watching the Miss Oklahoma pageant, and one of the contestants sang "You say potato, I say potato . . ." but pronounced all instances of potato,
tomato, etc., the same way. He told Fish about this, and Fish threw
up his hands and said, "Brilliant! She's the first beauty contestant who
actually understands the song!"

We've discussed this before, but my two cents on "The Conversation" is that it's overrated. Michael Sragow says Hackman's performance makes up for the "wispiness of the script". I'd rather just watch a movie with a more interesting script and more of a plot. Heresy, I know. I'm sure the movie must be some kind of classic in the realm of audio editing, but I don't care. More plot, hippies! The whole thing could've been condensed into an hour given its actual substance.

Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Paul B: it is my understanding, 'tis indeed the Dan Joseph of DC roots' fame. Also: haven't heard the name Crippled Pilgrims in ages.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Mike East:

@Ike - I wouldn't really argue with you. That film is all about Hackman's performance. In a lesser actor's hands, it wouldn't be watchable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
Michael 98145:

thanks, Guido. i would never have guessed that. "Unter Strom" "under current"
  5:27pm
Ike:

I was just thrown off by the idea that it might be better than Godfather I or II. Poppycock! Actually it might also have been an issue of expectations for me. Shouldn't've gone into it expecting a paranoid 70s thriller.

Fabio:

Sorry Ike, but I will have to disagree with you on this. It is indeed a lot about Hackman's performance, yes. But, there is also a lot of subtlety in the direction and many details that give you a dense story without relying on the typical tropes -- and this is where the film shines. so many little details: here's just one - his name and his plastic raincoat... you see him wear it a lot and in many scenes it seems like a part of his body almost. now look up his character's last name... there is a real connection there. anyway, I just love it when a film can deliver so many ideas and details WITHOUT relying on the typical story approach, and Coppola always has had a soft spot for experimentation and pushing the boundaries -- it's part of what makes the Godfather II and Apocalypse Now so interesting (among other things)...

Dean:

I'm the wrong person to chime in on film, mostly because I don't much enjoy/get the medium. But I do appreciate the value of slim-to-no narrative. One of my favorite films is Barry Lyndon, for instance. The story is undernourished and the acting is bland, but something works, and it isn't entirely Kubrick's knack for taking pretty pictures. (FWIW, I don't think one can act on film, and directors/actors should stop trying to do it.) Another favorite is Diane Kurys' Peppermint Soda, which is also uneventful and understated. Not sure what these movies share, though, with another favorite, Blazing Saddles.
