I heard those fast muted guitar runs, and I thought... What's Al DiMeola up to these days?

Almost forgot what day it is, again. Hi Irene and all

Wow. I missed the greatest guitarist of all time, Al Di Meola. Dang it.

Hey I finally got my marathon swag. Now I'm up to, oh, I don't know, 300 shirts and about the same number of cd's...? Plus a ton of other stuff...

hi irene. hi everyone. it is a dark and stormy night in nj...
Avatar 9:45pm
Van in DC:

I had never heard Al Di Meola played here (he might have been but I missed it?), but he was absolutely considered the greatest ever, back in the day. Another greatest ever, Maynard Ferguson, on trumpet, I would bet heavily has never been played here either.

Irene Trudel:

HI Jeff, Van, Rev.Rabbit and jon! I was feeling a but fusion-y today. And a bunch of friends were emailing yesterday about The Mahavishnu Orchestra so I had to jump on it. I actually don't know what Di Meola is up to lately. But I've played his music before, just not for a long while.
Avatar 9:50pm
Van in DC:

Freeform is wide reaching, for sure, but even the great FMU shuns some of the greats that deserve to be heard.

Im My Opinion.

Peter K.:

Did you play that Mahavishnu track because John McLaughlin (the other one, the pundit who screamed at people on TV) died today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

DiMeola may have a slight edge on McLaughlin on speed - but McLaughlin has more Soul, of his own kind (Eastern Meditation)? Tell me if I'm off base...Anyhow - they've worked together (Friday Night in San Francisco - w/ Flamenco master Paco de Lucía) & presumably mutual admire...
We're the McLaughlin Group tonight Peter!

Van in DC:

In the 70's, 80's... you ask anyone, who is the greatest guitarist alive? Anyone who knows anything about music? Al Di Meola. Maybe it was late 70's timeframe. Man was he awesome, and everyone knew it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Zappa was too close to McLaughlin for comfort (Jan Hammer & such) - but said obviously you have to credit the technique. I've found Di Meola cold. What am I missing?

Van in DC:

I officially request "Conquistador" by Maynard Ferguson.

Look it up. I know it won't appear tonight, but check it out for maybe a future play?

No, Peter, although I almost had a heart attack when I saw the headline on my phone! As for Al Di Meola, I did like him a lot but he often fell in that category of "too many notes!" Rev. Rabbit, I don't know if I'd put Zappa in that same category. He was something a bit other. I recommend seeing the new documentary about Zappa. Very entertaining and no narration, which is really refreshing. Van, Maynard is duly noted for next week. Please send me a reminder!

Just want to say these Bobby Hutcherson tunes are quite new n refreshing to me.

P-90:

@Jake: agreed: xylophones (and vibraphones) rule!

@ DJ Irene: totally with you that di Meola falls into the "sometimes lots of notes seemingly just for the sake of lots of notes" category. Sometimes.
He also played on some pretty classic things, I guess it depends a lot on who he was playing with. And how show-offy his agenda was at a particular moment in his career.
Likewise, Zappa sometime played a helluva lot of notes when soloing, but I always felt like those notes all "counted", every single one of them. He's not as well recognized as an improvisational musician as he probably should be, partly because of all the other things he did so well...composer, producer/arranger, bandleader, and yes: a famously witty comedian of sorts.

Irene, so many thanks for all you do.

Thanks, coelacanth, Alejandrool, Jake and Mike! I saw Bobby play live quite a few times and was blown away by the depth of styles he could play in. So inventive, at times reminding me of a fluttering hummingbird when he played.

Yeah, like what Van just said. Totally.

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Di Meola - 'too many notes'. Zappa was pretty Fusiony sometimes - in terms of the whole band - if not quite the same animal as a Guitarist. He was, yeah, all cynical & Comical though, whereas McLaughlin was all Spiritually serious - which put them @ odds...

Man - Jazz Giants are such treasures. Losing them - the consolation I guess is so many are paragons of a life lived fully.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I quote this Jackson Pollack so much I'm embarrassed - but:
'Technique is just a way of arriving @ a Statement.'
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
Irene Trudel:

P-90, I agree with your point. Zappa's playing usually sounded like it was all a big composition with little improv spots (which is the most likely scenario). He came at the music through rock and classical music. Al Di Meola and others in his generation came at the music through jazz, which has a strong basis in improvisation. Two totally different approaches, IMO. And, yeah, Rev. Rabbit-- great quote!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Sometimes think Zappa had some highbrow - lowbrow confusion. But then think - who am I to say that??
'Friday Night in San Francisco' - Di Meola, McLaughlin & de Lucia - just three acoustic guitars playing off each other. Haven't listened to that in decades maybe!

coelacanth:

appropriately Beautiful tribute, Irene. Thanks.

Well, once again, I reference Clapton, nickname "God", of guitar. Asked by a writer once, "What's it like to be the greatest guitarist alive?" He said, "I wouldn't know. Go ask Prince."
