P-90:

btw @DJ Julie: last week had friends over, while we were cooking dinner we were taking turns playing music for each other off the internet- you know, "have you heard this?" kind of thisg. I played them "In the Dark' from one of your archives and they flipped, couldn't believe they hadn't heard this song or band before, they made me start it again as soon as it was done, had to hear it twice...

A baby-naming guide I read not too long ago listed Walter among the least appealing of boys' names -- Carl was in that same category. I think Walter deserves better. Carl though, is admittedly tough to carry off. Unless you're a Wilson.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:23pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Pete Townshend coined 'Power Pop'. I'm trying to promote the term 'SmartPop'. The Kinks perhaps - ? - proto-invented that...perhaps 'Village Green' especially...

Isn't smart pop popcorn?
  5:24pm
Cherry:

do you prefer a youtube link or the name?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm

Power pop, to me, implies a default chugging tempo. The Kinks are in a different category.

Avatar 🦇 5:24pm

Pop is indeed a drink, power pop must be heavy on the caffeine

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...different category, right. Kinks inform Magnetic Fields, what have you...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
Hughie Considine:

@Rev, seems to me ELO is sort of symphonic pop. Power pop is Dwight Twilley and early Cheap Trick-derived.
Avatar 🦇 Swag For Life Member 5:26pm

...that's my point: Who is PowerPop, Kinks is SmartPop...anyhow...

I agree 100%. And I'm being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering, #2 in the nation. Imagine my SHOCK when they had no connection to nutrition or alternative medicine anywhere, and the doctors shrugged it all off! You have to really dig around to get anyone to reluctantly help you with that.

Mostly it's still images projected one by one on a big screen in a small-ish theater, accompanied by a great free-form soundtrack including Siouxsie and raunchy funk and loads of other stuff.

@ Ike -- LOVE Nan Goldin! will definitely check that out
i was lucky enough to see her traveling "Ballad of Sexual Dependency" show way back when (pretty sure it was @ Maxwell's here in Hoboken!)
and that is just SO way COOL! Cookie Mueller is your aunt? WOW!!!!
@ melinda -- her books are great but please do go see an exhibit if you have the chance! this one @ MoMA sounds very similar to "Ballad"

I saw The Ballad of Sexual Dependency in the 90s, it would be good to see it again, especially since Goldin is always changing it.

justin hayward played acoustic up near me in sugar loaf and i passed based on the amount of newer stuff he does in concert now that i find to be just pap. he's still in fine voice though.

There was an exhibit similar to the one described here-slides and music- at the ICA in Boston a year or two ago but I couldn't make down, was really bummed.

why don't people have aunt's named 'cookie' anymore? guy i worked for called his wife 'freckles' - we had a dog named freckles when i was a kid.

Ike:

@slugluv it is actually called "Ballad of Sexual Dependency" at MoMA. And based on what @icewolf commented above, I presume it's a different version than elsewhere perhaps. It's not clear from the info provided at MoMA as far as I saw. Thanks @icewolf.

I discovered the book called the Ballad of Sexual Dependency at the Iowa City Public Library in the mid 90s and would check it out frequently, and when my record showed that it was overdue once when I was trying to check out another book, the librarian was too embarrassed to say the title out loud. Which made me embarrassed because it sounds like a bad self-help title if you don't know otherwise.

@melinda: ha! It's also the title of a song from The Threepenny Opera

excellent show. i wish you'd get a fall prime time slot - not just a summer replacement special - like shields and yarnell.

@ Ike -- fascinating! the version i saw was from the early 1980s (i have the book too)
but even then, it was an ever-evolving show/exhibit of photographs and music -- i had no idea she was still doing this -- very cool!

@ melinda -- omg! i only knew the title through Nan Goldin, so . . . i guess it would never occur to me that it was anything else! bummer about that librarian!
@ icewolf -- i had no idea either! (& my Mom LOVED The Threepenny Opera, i should KNOW this!)
