Failure. It's what's for dinner.
Avatar 3:29pm
V Priceless:

speaking of "it's what's for dinner", this Saturday would have been the 99th bday of Robert Mitchum, for anyone keeping track....the original "poet with an ax".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:31pm
foofs:

V, if you're not familiar with Julian Cope's song 'Robert Mitchum', it's a sweet little treat.

have had NIGHT OF THE HUNTER on the playlist @ home for ages. Might have to finally do it..
Avatar 3:37pm
V Priceless:

@ foofs - will explore - thanks for the tip; Hugh Cornwell does a trib too, called "The Big Sleep".
@Rev - if you've never seen it, whoa...maybe my fave film ever.

Wonder if they still make Total cereal? I know I could Google it, but I'm awfully busy. The life of a drawbridge oiler is never calm.

Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Neil: I did find a pristine copy of the Beefheart Yellow Brick Road/Abba Zaba 7" (buddha green label) at a thrift-store down here (DC)... 30ish years ago. Never a better score before or since.
  3:53pm
Fredericks:

Man, Roscoe Mitchell does a convincing Ornette Coleman.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 3:57pm

re: Night of the Hunter - great film, haven't watched it in a very long time. Also, Cape Fear! (The original and his cameo in the remake.)
Avatar 3:59pm
Wild Neil:

@Rev-I run hot and cold on the Captain, but that is an AWESOME find to be sure! I bet you paid two bucks for it too....
I found a Neil Young bootleg in an Episcopal Thrift Store with really shitty hours in an obscure location. THOSE thrift stores are really high on the ignorance index.
Avatar 4:04pm
V Priceless:

@ JtotheK: agreed 'Cape Fear' is brilliant, and it was cool of Scorsese to cast both Mitch and Peck in the remake...
Avatar 👻 4:04pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

It would have been about 0.50, that single... the store is long gone (was under the tracks at the Rhode Island Ave metro stop). .. I still have a large collection of wacky outsider religious records scored from thrift-stores. Exorcisms, rock-and-roll-is-satan, etc... Found a copy of that "FLIGHT F-I-N-A-L" classic at another thrift store...
Avatar 4:07pm
Cecile:

I found the Dust album Hard Attack and Tim Buckley's Blue Afternoon for fifty cents each in Marquette, MI.
Avatar 4:07pm
Chris from DC:

Wow, final flight, nice
Avatar 4:07pm
Cecile:

that was in an actual record store with a used section.
Avatar 4:10pm
Chris from DC:

I got that New Sounds comp with Steve Reich's "Come Out" for $2. Probably the best score I can think of.
Avatar 👻 4:10pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

By a longshot, the greatest LP find at a thrift shop was this beauty. Best $1 ever spent, ever: www.discogs.com...
Avatar 👻 4:11pm
Rev. Turnip Druid:

So much sampling was done from that.
  4:13pm

So flatly ignored. Hurt.
  4:14pm

Pharoah can pull out the John Coltrane as needed, as well. Great set Fabio.

Taxi Driver OST (Hermann) is pretty good, haven't listened to that LP in a while.

The Bruce Connor show is off the hook! You should play 'Breakaway' by Toni Basel.

Re: no computerized playlist, well, this is computerized and this is a playlist. But it's not run or chosen by an algorithm, which I'm sure is what you mean, Fabs. It's not Skynet radio. Yeah, that's right, I just implied that Pandora wants to kill all humans! You heard it here first.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:30pm
JtotheK:

the Toni Basil 'Breakaway' 45 (original pressing) appears to still go for 300+. i'd like to find it in a $1 bin someday.

Fredericks:

Japanese Krautrock!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
Mike East:

I've been going to more and more parties and BBQ's that use Pandora to choose their music...and usually with ads. This annoys me greatly, though I try to be polite. Maybe I should start telling them about the dangers of bringing AI into your home so I'll just sound paranoid instead of sounding like a snob.
Avatar 4:40pm
Cecile:

I'd rather Pandora than the dumbos at Clear Channel.
Avatar 4:42pm
Wild Neil:

Toni Basil was HOT.
Pandora is on my phone. I think WFMU is BETTER because it finds more obscure stuff....but Pandora is pretty good at finidng it too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:42pm
Mike East:

@Cecile - my one sister has been playing clearchannel stations at her BBQ's this summer. I find it baffling...but again...I try to be polite. But, come on! I'd rather be listening to one of her Matthew Sweet CD's than goddamn cars4kidz ads!

It's a just Toni Basil dancing to the song & she will haunt your dreams, in a good way.
