This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Some good animal cries on this one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm
melinda:

Yeah, great animal noises!
Avatar 7:34pm
Flash Strap:

Here's a great example of a classic Denny approach: Hawaiian, but with essentially no "actual" Hawaiian instrumentation

Little Danny:

Tuned in, Flash. Can't wait to see/hear your take on the Denny catalog!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm
melinda:

I love the album cover of Hypnotique, it's hard to know what I'm looking at. Are those pillars or oversized exotic drinks?
Avatar 7:44pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Danny! Thanks for the vote of confidence

@Melinda: I think they're Japanese sashes? Oh, but one seems to be a huge bottle full of something pink, with a giant toy windmill coming out of it. It's a kooky cover
Avatar 7:47pm
Flash Strap:

I think Exotica 2 really has some extremely creative arrangements, it doesn't get the credit it deserves in that regard
Avatar 7:49pm
mauri:

uu exotica! Hey Flash. I like vol2 more.
Avatar 7:51pm

right with ya, Mauri, and welcome !

No love for Exotica vol 3?
Avatar 8:10pm
Flash Strap:

Exotica 3 came out in '59, and so we will hear selections from it once we've cleared 1958. I will say it is probably only third best of his four LPs from that year, but I have much love for it indeed

Love Gene Rains's version of "cockfight"--really swings.
Avatar 8:30pm
Flash Strap:

Oh man, he actually did FIVE LPs in '59. Damn, man
Avatar 8:40pm
Flash Strap:

Hi Natoo! I agree- Gene Rains' exotica is really top notch stuff
Avatar 8:45pm
Flash Strap:

This one is so garish
Avatar 8:50pm
Flash Strap:

These are just such great moments of Exotica. This is such a crucial record

SO good oh man
Avatar 8:52pm
Flash Strap:

alright we're about to switch it up now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm
melinda:

The bird calls remind me of a time when heard what was probably a large bird but sounded like a human imitating a bird, coming from behind a row of trees next to a field near my house. It was weird.
Avatar 8:57pm
Flash Strap:

you ever hear that owl that sounds like someone imitating a horse's whinny?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:58pm
melinda:

No, even weirder!
Avatar 9:00pm
Flash Strap:

birds are so weird, they have such amazing vocal capabilities
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm
Little Danny:

I had to pull out my own copy of vol. III to confirm what I'd heard you say. Was the "he has been copied and imitated by several other groups" quote a jab by Liberty Records at Arthur Lyman?
Avatar 9:16pm
Flash Strap:

I wonder. I know Denny and he reconciled, but he was definitely (a little unfairly, I think) resentful of Lyman's defection/subsequent direction
Avatar 9:18pm
Flash Strap:

Of course, there's no limit to other imitators as well. Tho that is the bedrock of Denny's career: imitation
Avatar 9:41pm
Flash Strap:

we're also skipping three LPs that came out between '60 and '61: Exotic Sounds From the Silver Screen, Exotic Sounds visit Broadway, and Romantica. Because they are boring. But I mention it to note how prolific the whole Denny machine was
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm
Little Danny:

"Song of the Bayou" is an all-time fave. Love the organ.
Avatar 9:52pm

Mine too!
