Eat at Le Fette Sau on Metropolitan, it's a carnivore's paradise. I haven't record shopped in Bk in years, so I should let someone else answer. That said, my buddy Doug runs Record Grouch on Manhattan Ave., Fabio has the Earwax store on the Northside, and several staffers here work or have worked at Academy Recs. ...

Great set Wm.

Ah! Love it! *Almost* rewatched it recently. I've got my eye on the DVD in my collection for an upcoming sesh ... It was directed by Dante Tomaselli's uncle, and according to IMDb, Dante has a remake in the works. ...
  12:24am
Rory:

Nice! I had no idea a remake was in the works.

Brooklyn is a huge place. Record stores are mostly in GreenBushPointBurg (Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Bushwick). As for food, that is where the “huge place” aspect of that comes from.

If you are in a neighborhood that has a taco place of some sort—including a truck—that is a good choice. The Halal trucks are uniformly crappy drunk food nowadays. Good pizza is a huge debate but the basic pizza places kinda suck nowadays. The 99 cent slices? Even worse. So you need to go on who knows what where.

If you are in Williamsburg, one place I would recommend for a cheap bite—no ambiance though—is Oasis falafel on North 7th Street right outside the Bedford Avenue stop. No place to hang out or take a date, but the food itself is top notch for what it is: A cheap falafel or schwarma meal.

I would give an extremity for good middle eastern food in this parched land of nothingness I occupy.
Avatar 12:56am
Wm.:

I was going to recommend Oasis, too. Great food, just get it to go.
  12:57am
Carmichael:

Given the musical motif, I thought I should speak severely.
Avatar 12:59am
Wm.:

...I used to live right near that corner in the early 90s; there was no Oasis restaurant there, it was all good Polish food in that area ... my rent was probably 1/4 of what the kiddies are paying there now.
  1:00am
JakeGould:

@Carmichael: Where are you? For me in Bay Ridge, Hazar’s sandwiches and platters are great. There is also an Egyptian grilled fish place on my block that is apparently good but I’m not into fish so I have no idea.

Also, if this is the first time you are coming to New York and you have heard about Nathan’s hot dogs here is the deal: They are just plain—albeit very good—hot dogs. Just go to a Gray’s Papaya or even Crif Dog instead.
  1:01am
JakeGould:

@Wm.: The later 1980s is when I started to visit Williamsburg. Getting on the L train just to go to Bedford was a tad terrifying then; trains were desolate. Now it’s horrific because the trains are packed past normal capacity.

When I asked my dad—who worked in Williamsburg in the 1960s and 1970s—what work was like his only response was how he and co-workers coordinated walking/running in packs to get to and from the subway.

@JakeGould Hahaha! I miss the "Wild West" Brooklyn days!
  1:03am
Carmichael:

Jake, I'm in California, the capitol city. Some things, regardless of real estate, never change.
  1:05am
JakeGould:

@Wm.: Kinda puts perspective on what “unsafe” is nowadays. Honestly most of the crimes I hear on the news seem like the normal aberrations any society will have nowadays.

Not like when I rode the L train and had a guy across from me doing fancy hand tricks with a butterfly knife just to scare me back in the day. At least the party I was going to was worth the harassment!
  1:06am
JakeGould:

@Carmichael: What do you mean? Like local politics and such. I’m going to rematch “L.A. Confidential” so I can be reminded of how things work you know.
  1:06am
Rory:

There's a Polish restaurant 20 mins from where I live. It's owned by a. 90 year old woman. She makes the best Borscht soup I've ever had. When Borscht is made right there's nothing better IMO.
Avatar 1:09am
Wm.:

@JakeGould I was out in Bushwick in the early 90s too, definitely saw some shit. Watched an Asian kid get "wilded" on the Lorimer St. platform, it was over before I could even react. After I left that apt., my former roommate was stabbed in the chest while on the payphone in front of our bldg. ...Now you can't find a parking space in Bushwick, as opp. to fearing your car would be gone when you returned to it.
Avatar 1:10am
Wm.:

@Rory Agreed. I love a good bowl of borscht.
  1:12am
JakeGould:

Borscht is good. All of that great stuff requires sitting around all day and boiling something while lamenting life. So hey…
  1:14am
Carmichael:

Sadly, I wouldn't know borscht if it bit me in the butt. LA is far south, food culture is far to the east. I live in a city known as "quaint". This music energizes me.
  1:17am
Arbol:

I just want to say that making Borscht at home with a juicer, and juicing all the beets, then using the pulp with the beet juice, and whatever else you put into it, is a very rewarding thing. It wakes up your bones and allows you to have sex for a very long time.
  1:19am
Carmichael:

@arbol, really?? For a guy or a gal, or does it matter? That's a game changer...
  1:22am
Arbol:

@Jake- It takes less than two hours if you're using a juicer instead of trying to simmer the stuff into mush manually.

@Carmichael- I am just going from experience, not science or nutritionism or whatnot. And generally just being a goof. But if pomegranate is a "natural aphrodisiac", I imagine beets are higher up in that tree.

Root vegetables are one of those "secrets to life" dietary choices. Beets especially.
  1:30am
JakeGould:

I think it’s basically because root vegetables are filled with potassium and help you shit better.
  1:33am
Rory:

Again, great set!

Erck:

Wm I forgot my keys! I'm outside when you get a sec! - E
  2:35am
Arbol:

Well, if you eat enough borscht, your shit will be red, urine will be pink, but most people don't have sex with a concern to shit better. At least not lately.
  2:39am
Arbol:

I love SAND. Wm, have you heard ALU? It is the synthy thing they did after SAND disbanded. It is great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-BAmuqlYz8
Avatar 2:43am
Wm.:

@Arbol Indeed, I love that Alu record. I think we have the CD reissue here, if not I have it at home on digital. It's an outstanding piece of Neue Deutsche Welle monotony. Very nice, great songs! Something for next week's show.
