...& one pet topic is the ways in which the common myth that there was nothing betwixt Elvis in the Army & The Beatles in America - is true - & is definitely *not* true. Surf is one of the more important cornerstones there - especially for the future of Rawk Guitar (ferinstance). Dick Dale was pushing amplifier volume & limitations w/ Fender on the West Coast - & Fender amps were the direct model for the Marshall amps in England that The Who would help pioneer - & the rest is HardRawk history...

The BBoys v. Beatles dynamic is relevant to this day I think. I've thot about it long enuff that I concluded that the B.Boys emotional root tone is the Pre-Kennedy Assassination America - & The Beatles share in that w/ also a lot of the hope for a Revolutionary world beyond that. There is heavy Nostalgia as a them &/or tone in both bands.
I'm just old enuff that The Ventures had riffs that were important in teaching us guitar - like the yARdbiRds were.
Heard just a little Shadows from England - & they're like the British Ventures - very kewl rekkids that you never hear anywhere...

@geez: 'Raunchy', actually. & what Paul played for John when they met was Eddie Cochran's '20 Flight Rock'. Impressive he could tune the guitar, & knew the whole thing...What John was singing when Paul 1st saw him was the DelVikings' 'Come & Go With Me' - but he didn't know all the words & was making up edgier ones - which impressed Paul...
Learned that some of what I admired Carl Stalling for was actually Raymond Scott. & Scott got a lot of flack for his style @ the time, I think is the story...

"His legacy underwent a revival in the early 1990s after Irwin Chusid met Raymond and his wife Mitzi at their home in California and discovered a vast collection of unreleased recordings of rehearsals and studio sessions.[15] In 1992, the release of Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights on Columbia produced by Irwin Chusid (with Hal Willner as executive producer) was the first major-label CD compilation of his groundbreaking 1937–39 six-man quintet. A year earlier, Irwin Chusid and Will Friedwald produced a CD of live Scott quintet broadcasts titled The Man Who Made Cartoons Swing for the Stash label. Around this time, the director of The Ren & Stimpy Show, John Kricfalusi, began hot-wiring his cartoon episodes with original Scott quintet recordings."
