I could go for a bite to eat at this hour. Where's that Arby's dude when a guy is feeling hungry?

Ray Charles?
Avatar 10:32pm
Joel St. Germain:

Anyone else see the Ray Charles bio-pic? It's ultra saccharine oscarbate but I still sat through it.

There is someone who shills for Arby’s in the comments every now and then. www.wfmu.org...

Ha. This individual is an Asmus Tietchens and Violent Onsen Geisha fan too. That's cool.

i have a strong suspicion Arby's is a dj.

The Arby’s account showed up on Mayo’s show that was a fill-in for Dave Hill. www.wfmu.org...

Good eve, dj and listeners. I have no preference among fast food purveyors.

I recall enjoying the Ray Charles movie but yeah, I agree with the assessment. I used to feel compelled to watch musician biopics even if they weren't great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Arby's signature condiment is something called Horsey Sauce™.
Avatar 10:54pm
Joel St. Germain:

I can't remember if it was a SNL parody or if Ray Charles really was in Arby's commercials talking about Horsey Sauce etc
  10:54pm
Carmichael:

Feed radishes to horses and ... yeah.
  10:57pm
JakeGould:

Ray Charles seems to have leant his voice to an Arby’s campaign back in the 1990s. raycharlesvideomuseum.blogspot.com...

Hey !
melinda I used to feel compelled too but no more.
There's a sameness,an accepted format to most of them.
I like the Jerry Lee one with Dennis Quaid,Winona Ryder & John Doe cause the acting is so good in a Looney Toons way.
Avatar 10:59pm
Joel St. Germain:

I need to watch that again, geezer. I was a young boy when it came out.
Avatar 11:00pm
geezerette:

Ah,Tony Conrad. Beautiful.
  11:00pm
JakeGould:

I’m kind of over biopics. They all seem like they are filmed on rails nowadays. Ditto with action films. Humbug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

I'd rather watch a documentary showing the actual artist than a scripted life story of the artist portrayed by actors.
Avatar 11:02pm
geezerette:

@Joel: don't remember who wrote or directed it but the actors are so good.
  11:02pm
Carmichael:

Sammy Davis does a great "plop plop fizz fizz" commercial. And I woke up this morning to some old surf movie, except the kids wore suits and twisted to records. Bobby Vinton showed up to sing.
Avatar 11:04pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

I like Biopics better if it's upfront that it's an Impression - like 'I'm Not There' about Dylan by Todd Haynes. Cause - they are anyway. I agree about Docs - absolutely - but they don't rake in dollars like Drammas do, so they don't get made...& they are somebody's Impression also anyhow...
Avatar 11:08pm
geezerette:

Don't you think the documentaries are talking heads echoing feeble stock phrases for the most part? The good ones are rare. There's a great one about Ray Charles. Taylor Hackford's one on Chuck Berry with the man himself, and a great recent one on B.B. King called "The Life of Riley".
Avatar 11:09pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...yerknow - 'oh the Drama'...they gotta make a story that titillates...I feel if I learn something about them - it's a success - but then you learn the liberties they all take w/ the facts...
  11:10pm
JakeGould:

Liking this “Meek Rabbit”… And this is their entire recorded output right here? That cover art is great too.
Avatar 11:11pm
Joel St. Germain:

yeah Jake, great record. Glad you like it.

Avatar 11:19pm
Joel St. Germain:

hey there who! cool, thanks much!! have a great night
Avatar 11:20pm
geezerette:

Haven't seen "Jackie Maclean on Mars",which is old,but heard it was a good one. Bruce Weber's Chet Baker doc,"Let's Get Lost" is creepy but Weber's camera is very seductive,so I'm ambivalent about that one.
  11:21pm
JakeGould:

Well, the docs that feature the artists or—like RevRabbit mention—go completely bonkers are fine with me. It’s just all of these biopics that are more predictable than anything. I mean “The Blues Brothers” has a deeper plot than most music bios.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm
melinda:

I agree that documentaries are better, even the lame ones. I'll watch any doc about bands or musicians, some are definitely better than others.
Avatar 11:22pm
geezerette:

haha,can't argue with that!

I loved Behind the Music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Whosondephone:

This record sounds like it has been played a lot. Am I right?
Avatar 11:27pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - yerknow - I don't even have to like the Artist so much. Those VH1s are actually often interesting & done okay for TV quicky stuff.
I know I'd learn something & be entertained by both those - Wreckers & 'Tallica. PBS had one on Muscle Shoals not long ago I really appreciated. There's a film about Sarge Records in Texas I wish they didn't protect their Rights for (as they should) so well :) ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm
melinda:

I really liked the Muscle Shoals doc too.
Avatar 11:28pm
Joel St. Germain:

who - how dare you? just kiddin. uhm It hasn't been played too much, actually. I mean I've probably played it 10x but it's not too worn out (I bought it used, obviously). The Fuego record on the other hand is dull as dirt.
Avatar 11:31pm
Joel St. Germain:

I've got really good headphones on and I can't hear any problems with it. Ride the wave, who!
Avatar 11:31pm
geezerette:

Carmichael "The Wrecking Crew" was great!
Also agree on Muscle Shoals.

Haven't seen Metallica one. Sounds maybe worth it.

Oh just one more, "Partly Fiction" on Harry Dean Stanton was great and a total head scratcher. Good film making.
  11:32pm
Carmichael:

Yes, I also just saw the Muscle Shoals doc. One of the more fascinating shows for me.
  11:33pm
Clay Pigeon:

I thought Jamie Foxx was excellent as Ray Charles in Ray.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Whosondephone:

Playing records is good!!! I wasn't sure, just wondering. It seems that that harsh/distorted tone is a product of the vinyl mastering or something else. Some DJ's have mentioned that it happens with the mp3 stream which I have switched to.
Avatar 11:33pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Sgt. Fitch: A Legacy of Sarg Records' - would appeal to FMUvians in several ways. Nowhere online I can see...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
melinda:

I want to see Partly Fiction. I saw Harry Dean Stanton when he toured in the late 80s, it was majorly exciting because It wasn't long after I'd seen him in Repo Man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
melinda:

Which is still one of my favorite movies.
Avatar 11:35pm
Joel St. Germain:

(yeah who, I don't know. maybe the levels are too high. I will have to check it out later .. of course by then it will be too late. it's too late now, even)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
melinda:

@Clay: yeah, Jamie Foxx was a very convincing Ray Charles.
Avatar 11:35pm
Joel St. Germain:

The last music doc I watched was the Spandau Ballet one and it didn't really do much for me.
  11:36pm
Carmichael:

Repo Man is a classic, as it should be.
Avatar 11:36pm
Joel St. Germain:

Jamie Foxx was good as Ray, yeah. It's the screenplay that stunk. White washed all the dark stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
Whosondephone:

I have failed to mention that I absolutely love this track!
Avatar 11:36pm
Joel St. Germain:

Repo Man rules. and while we're on the subject, Taxi Driver
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
melinda:

I wouldn't have guessed there was a Spandau Ballet documentary.

I saw Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain last night on the big screen. Pretty mindblowing if you've never seen it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdXGhsAynGI
