Favoriting May 31, 2016: Akira Ifukube Birthday Tribute
Morricone Island pays tribute to Japanese self-taught classical music and film composer Akira Ifukube (1914-2006) on what would have been his 102nd birthday. Ifukube's incredible body of work includes over 250 film soundtracks, most notably Ishiro Honda's 1954 Toho classic "Godzilla" as well as the title character's trademark roar and footsteps, respectively produced by rubbing a resin-covered leather glove over loosened strings of a double bass and by striking an amplified box.

I've been looking forward to this week's show!! Big fan of his Godzilla scores
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:12pm
dale:

costume? what costume?
  7:14pm
Listener Mike Wood:

My favorite score of his was "Godzilla vs Biollanté", for which Ifukube-san patiently recorded the sounds of various plants growing over a period of ten years, and then sped them up x1000 to use as Biollanté's various screams and attack-sounds

dunno, dale. i think it's a conspiracy theory.

YAY ! : )
...yerknow - as a kid in the 1970s, ya taped movies w/ yer cassette player. I taped 'Monster Zero' - & - most people wouldn't look twice @ this flick - but - I think it just - *sounded* really neat - yaknow ??...

God this is great! Also, “King Kong vs. Godzilla” is great! The scientists just constantly get King Kong drunk and airlift him to different places to fight Godzilla. Best plot ever!

Joe McG:

Devon, this music is great. I feel like fighting some big lizards.

Rabbit -- I did the same!! (But in the 80s)

KK vs. G makes so little sense it goes straight over to Surreal DreamLogic.
Speilberg advised the Muricans *not* to try to remake Godzilla - on the grounds that it was already so *convincing* as done in Japan. That's interesting from him, because that's not what *most* would say about these flicks...

Listener Mike Wood:

I love when the atmosphere of a movie or show can still be fully re-enjoyed off its audio track alone

@dale - it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good. Another attempt to cash in on a known brand without really giving people what they really love about the brand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm
Mike East:

make a campy low budget forced perspective guyinasuit version and maybe that'd be something

That 2014 Godzilla had such a tiny little head. It looked weird. (Only saw the trailer; didn't watch the actual movie).

Shin Gojira coming out of Japan this year:
Reportedly a Fukushima type theme - w/ a Gojira like the original post-Hiroshima Noir 1954 one - but all dried up & red w/ shriveled arms & a real mean look...Angry Red Godzilla for 2016...

The American Godzilla films have no fun or joy to them. It’s all dour and serious nonsense.

Muricans' have neither the proper sort of nuke terror - nor the kawaii...just nevermind - leave it to the Japanese.
Avatar 7:50pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...also the Japanese understanding of earthquakes & tsunamis...they're Natural forces - like Dragons...Mothra for example represents Mother Earth in a sense. It's heavy stuff, man! & also pure childhood escapism in remarkable toys...
