Hello Dave!

melinda:

hi Dave. Nice cover.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yeah - she's perfect for this.
Avatar 10:01pm
Scraps deSelby:

Wow, I didn't know this cover. H'lo Dave, h'lo people
  10:02pm
Carmichael:

Heya Dave and Echolites.
Avatar 10:03pm
Dave Mandl:

Hey Jake, melinda, RRN63, Scraps, Carmichael.
  10:03pm
JakeGould:

That Vivien Goldman mini collection is quite nice.
Avatar 10:03pm
Dave Mandl:

Yeah, that's a beautiful Kinks song, one of my faves.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...compares favorably to Beatles' 'She's Leaving Home' even...
Avatar 10:06pm
Dave Mandl:

Yup, true. A year earlier, I think!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Someone suggested 'Mother's Little Helper' is Kinks-stylee : I'd never thot of it!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
melinda:

@Rabbit: now that you mention it, yeah.
Avatar 10:12pm
Dave Mandl:

Yeah, I can see that. I never thought of that either.

PMD:

Nice. Hi Dave
  10:24pm
JakeGould:

FWIW, Vivien Goldman is a professor at NYU nowadays. viviengoldman.com
Avatar 10:25pm
Scraps deSelby:

I really like Face to Face, but the next three albums are flawless to me (Something Else, Village Green, Arthur)
Avatar 10:27pm
Scraps deSelby:

Red Mecca! Awesome.
Avatar 10:27pm
Dave Mandl:

@Scraps: Agreed. That was an amazing run. F2F is my favorite, but it's close.
Avatar 10:29pm
Dave Mandl:

@Jake: Huh. I didn't know that. I met her briefly a few years ago, but I don't think she was at NYU yet. Good for her.
  10:30pm
Carmichael:

For me it was Soap Opera, Schoolboys in Disgrace, Sleepwalker, Misfits and Low Budget.
  10:31pm
JakeGould:

And FWIW, I purchased her CD from Other Music… That we all now know will be disappearing. So crazy to think how many things she must be teaching at NYU that were once steps away in the Village before it became what it is nowadays.
  10:32pm
JakeGould:

Her courses:

Courses devised and taught at NYU's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, Tisch School of the Arts:

• Fela Anikulapo-Kuti: 2012
• Classic Punk and Beyond: 2005 – 2011
• Bob Marley and the Wailers: 2011
• Island Records: 2009
• Jamaican Music: 2006

I like that A Certain Ratio album, too. Very good next to "Sly Doubt"
Avatar 10:43pm
Dave Mandl:

@Scraps: Thanks. Yeah, that was actually a pre-planned segue, which is rare for me.
  10:55pm
Carmichael:

Sorry Dave, I have to bail. Too many weekend chores and faux athleticism. Tried to follow the Amgen Tour like a pro; ends up I'm a sad old guy. Will listen to the Kinks tonight.
Avatar 10:57pm
Dave Mandl:

@Carmichael: Ha. Thanks for sticking around this long. Have a good week.
Avatar 11:04pm
Scraps deSelby:

Wow, Canterbury scene! Awesome.
Avatar 11:05pm
Scraps deSelby:

I don't have this. I should.
Avatar 11:06pm
Dave Mandl:

@Scraps: It's very good.
Avatar 11:08pm
Scraps deSelby:

Caravan, too
Avatar 11:09pm
Dave Mandl:

Oh, right. Of course.
Avatar 11:26pm
Scraps deSelby:

Wow, this is excellent guitar work. Is it classical? In any case, I want it.
Avatar 11:28pm
Dave Mandl:

That last piece was Cornelius Cardew. Kind of an unusual piece for him (solo guitar), but really nice.
Avatar 11:28pm
Dave Mandl:

I guess he'd be considered a "classical composer," but pretty avant-garde.
Avatar 11:30pm
Scraps deSelby:

Thank you!
  11:36pm
greyhoos:

"Well-known communist." Way to get all HUAC on us, Dave.
Avatar 11:37pm
Scraps deSelby:

THREADGILL IS MY FAVORITE LIVING MUSICIAN.

Thank you!
Avatar 11:38pm
Scraps deSelby:

Very few times I hear Threadgill on the radio....
Avatar 11:40pm
Dave Mandl:

@greyhoos: Just joking (though he was a communist). I use the "C" word to describe myself from time to time.
Avatar 11:40pm
Dave Mandl:

@Scraps: My pleasure.
Avatar 11:42pm
Scraps deSelby:

I like Houle very much, too.

Very happy.
  11:42pm
greyhoos:

@Scraps: Likewise. Or at least my favorite living "composer"/conductor. (Since he apparently long since waved off the label of being considered a "jazz musician.")
Avatar 11:44pm
Scraps deSelby:

greyhoos: well okay!
  11:50pm
greyhoos:

@Dave: I know, I know. I'm pretty fascinated with Cardew's notations for scoring in those later/post-AMM years....
