I play music that is old and that is new. Some of it is digital while some is analog. It is from many different countries; sometimes it is loud and at other times it is quiet.

Oh hells yes. By coincidence I was listening to chiptune music for an imaginary video game on the FMA this weekend, so I am ALL SET for this show.

Did anyone else go see Makigami Koichi from Hikashu @ The Stone last week? Pretty sure Mayuko's show was my introduction to him/them.
Avatar 5:06pm
Mayuko:

Hello everyone, thank you for tuning into to this show which could possbly cause your brain cells to decrease into 8-bit!
Avatar 5:06pm
Mayuko:

I did, rbxbx!!! Was pretty great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:07pm
listener james from westwood:

I proofread a book that contained 600 QR codes. Had to proofread those too, by comparing them versus their original art. By the end my entire world looked as blocky as Donkey Kong.

hi everyone.

@Mayuko yeah! I super enjoyed myself. Was actually my first time at The Stone as well, which is something I've been meaning to do since I moved to NYC like 4 years ago, haha.
Avatar 5:11pm

Okkyung Lee and Ikue Mori were great.
Avatar 5:12pm

I loved Fantasy Zone – those games were so fun.
Avatar 5:14pm
Mayuko:

Feels like it's pretty common for us to fall into Donkey-Kongish situation in our lives, james...

Hello JtotheK!
Avatar 5:15pm
Mayuko:

the set I saw was only him and Ikue Mori, rbxbx - he was not only good but also hilarious! Would have been nice if I could see other sets, too.
Avatar 5:15pm
Mayuko:

And Koichi is coming back to NYC next year in May again!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
JtotheK:

Really enjoying this program, great idea for a show. Trying to think back to all the 8-bit themes I enjoyed on the NES. The cutscene music for Ninja Gaiden comes to mind.
Avatar 5:17pm
rbxbx:

Excellent. Will try to catch him again – I could imagine the set w/ just him and Ikue Mori being great in its own right as well. The 5 piece I saw got a bit harmonically dense at times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
JtotheK:

hahaha -- the goonies!
Avatar 5:19pm

i liked the music for Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, but i only ever heard the first couple themes because that game was so damned hard

@hyde haha yeah, so many of these older games were just me playing the first two stages over and over :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
JtotheK:

@hyde -- as was the genesis Ghosts and Goblins, and the NES Ghouls and Ghosts (I may have the titles backwards). Poor knight always running around in his undies sans armor.

i heard the Bubble Bobble music in public yesterday and recognized it immediately, even having not played the game since i was 10

Goonies on NES was a solid game!

Great, JtotheK, I first thought it could be a too silly idea, but I like them! so... Glad you're enjoying them too!

Retronauts, which is a classic videogame podcast i listen to, did a nice and informative thing on the evolution on music in games a couple years back. It's with the guy from Lost Turntable, I remember it being a good listen: www.retronauts.com...

Alright, going to have to catch the rest of this awesome show on the archives - heading out to see Beyonce in a big stadium. Most likely in a downpour. How did I get roped into that?

'Yaku, for years, Joe's talkover music was an 8-bit game theme that he and Todd O Phonic Tood recorded analog with a four-track reel to reel at the Jersey Shore.

Thank you for listening and comment, all! Raika, I picked music of the games I actually played & liked, and didn't own Sega Mark III sadly - I wish!!

That was fun, even though I never was much into video games: I was so bad at these!
I'm glad you played Omodaka, I first heard them on Gary's premium, and I love everything I heard from them so far.
This might be a bit far fetched, but I think you might like Nox Factio. One of my fave bands, though I don't know whether they are still active. They would use video games as sound sources live, heavily processed of course, for the rhythm in there. There's part of a show on the FMA (I was there, but I don't remember whether they used games then. The start of the second side makes me think they did): freemusicarchive.org...
Avatar 1:21am
Mayuko:

Thank you fred. Just downloaded Nox Factio, I figured I love it in the first second. I wasn't too good at video games either, I don't know how I was able to have such patience to play them then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
fred:

I'm so glad you like it!
