A great book is 'Storming Heaven: LSD & the American Dream' :
www.amazon.com...
- which is a social history of acid. It's not about the Music as such...I can't imagine this new book wouldn't be well worth it!

Good Sunday morning to you and the Guilloteens, Nate!

For all the Punk talk of 'Anarchy' - the Dead have come far closer than any other band, ever, to creating an actual Alternate Society.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...the inevitable irony being that the Dead gradually & eventually became their own Institution...
  8:06am
Jack:

agreed...a Mental Institution. Great interview, Nate. My friend ( a Deadhead) read the book, loved it, I'm up next. looking forward to it. Also, Jesse's written other books, looks interesting.

Mailman Tom:

I saw the Grateful Dead for the first time at the Fillmore East in June 1969. I've been a fan ever since. I'm interested in buying the book after hearing this show.
  8:18am
Jack:

in 1969 I bought the first 4 Dead albums, having never heard them (they were never played on the radio) I did not like them at all - too plinky, didn't rock hard like Hendrix, Cream, etc. - and then I took acid, and suddenly instantly the music made great sense and I loved it! to this day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23am
Nate K.:

Jack, I've heard that that can happen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'American Beauty' was my gateway to the Dead - an album lacking nothing that makes Greatness.
Musically - I think if (& only if) you get to pick & choose - hopefully w/ some informed assistance - you can become very much a Dead enthusiast. But - w/ the gushing firehose of Music available now - I very rarely choose it...or choose to sift thru it...
I concluded that the definition of 'Folk Music' is anything you & someone else you might run into on the beach w/ a fire & a guitar might both know. The Dead were easily & notably - that. Even Punks you'd meet would know the Dead too...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31am
Sem Chumbo:

Good questions while going with the flow of answers.
Free form, so to say. Nice, Nate.
Glad of being here now to hear it.
  8:33am
goat friend:

Great I-view. Book sounds super. Thanks kiddos.
  8:36am
judy from croton:

Grateful Dead. Never been able to explain why the music got right into my bones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Dead were paradoxically outside the Music Biz mainstream & their own Subculture to such a degree - they were/are simultaneously know to everyone as Folk Music - & left out of all Critical evaluations of Music History - even still if less than before...
  8:44am
KP:

Clarence White of the later Byrds had tremendous Bluegrass group called the Kentucky Colonels. They have a great live album at the Ash Grove and Jerry Garcia introduces them.

Garcia: 'There's nothing wrong w/ Owsley that a few billion fewer brain cells wouldn't cure.'
  8:49am
Jack:

Also: Blue Cheer. Vincebus Eruptum was recorded doing amphetamines and whiskey, Insideoutside was recorded..well, after they met Owsley. Listen to the difdference.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50am
Smilty69:

The only time I was ever arrested was at a Dead show. It was still a great show though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'Blue Cheer' was the name of an Owsley 'product'. Indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The Dead along w/ Bill Graham's Fillmores...& Owsley - played important roles in developing P.A. systems. How often are they credited?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56am
Sem Chumbo:

See ya later, Nate. Take care.
  8:57am
Jack:

Thanks Nate! Great show. And thanks Jesse can't wait to read your book.
