Uh, not to nitpick, but the past tense of "swing" is "swang," i.e. "Thanks to everyone who SWANG by the Record Fair." You're welcome.

  12:40pm

Oh coel, I'm just having a little fun at the exhausted DJ's expense. Of course you're right. But swang SHOULD be a word, darn it. Once when Dizzy Dean was doing color commentary on a ballgame, he said, "He SLUD into third base." In his accent, it sounded correct. He also burst into a few bars of "The Wabash Cannonball," if memory serves. Baseball is slow-moving enough for the commentators to sing songs, read poems and play a game of chess in between pitches.
  12:42pm

Schwang!

and i see the WORDS tawk in the thread, and reminds me of a Vonnegut book that had a character named Hoobler. there was a Hoobler at work. i used to say "hoobler, he who or that which hoobles.".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm
coelacanth:

which Vonnegut book, herb? He's one of my favorites, along with the aforementioned García Márquez, but i've only read about 1/2 his books.
Avatar 1:30pm
InBrkly:

That would be Breakfast of Champions. I don't think it was one of his better books.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:35pm
coelacanth:

Thanks. considering that i may not live forever, and there are many other, non-Vonnegut books to read, i maybe won't read every one after all... what are you're favorites?
Avatar 1:35pm
herb.nyc:

yes, it WAS b'fast of chumps. that's the only vonnegut i've ever read. i should read more. now reading a 25cent hardbk from nypl sale, "somebody's gotta tell it", journalism memoir of village voice's (and more) Jack Newfield. his coverage of '68 prez race and RFK is not-put-down-able; same with daily news strike of 1989. i've a library hold on Ted Rall's "snowden", and i just picked up "citizen4" docu from mulberry branch of nypl. (it's that time of year when nypl is asking us to write letters to city hall. i did 2.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm
coelacanth:

hmm, i might read "snowden".
Avatar 1:38pm
InBrkly:

It has been a good 20 years since I've read any Vonnegut so it is hard to make a recommendation. I recall that many of his books are quite short and I read most of them over one summer. I think I liked Sirens of Titan best.
Avatar 1:40pm
InBrkly:

I think Breakfast was famous because he wrote it while taking LSD to test the hypothesis that it made you more creative. But I was just checking google and havent found confirmation.
Avatar 1:41pm

But all of his books left some impression on me. Sometimes phrases from his writing will just pop into my head weird moments.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm

cool. after reading whatever titles i had at my disposal i planned to read the rest in chronological order, from his first. i had to special-order "player piano"; "sirens of titan" happens to be next!
Avatar 1:45pm

He remarried. I dont recall that either wife was a writer but his son wrote a book about his experience with sushizophrenia. It wasn't great but it was an interesting snapshot of life in a hippy commune.

Cat's Cradle made a big impression on me, but that was long, long ago. I also just purchased Player Piano to re-read.

player piano was good, but yes- he hadn't gotten his stride yet. Bluebeard is one of my favorite books by anybody!
Avatar 1:50pm
InBrkly:

Hmm since Vonnegut is rolling around my head now--I was just thinking how in many of his books he uses drawings or symbols mixed in with the typography. I wonder how they handle that in the ebooks.

Maybe they have a Vonnegut typeface. I'd like to have that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm
coelacanth:

Michael, "cat's cradle" has been recommended to me several times, so i'm fairly psyched to get to that one.
Avatar 1:52pm

This isn't really a spoiler I hope but in Galapagos he straight up tells you at the beginning that he is going to put a little star next to the name of everyone who is going to die by the end. For some reason that put a lot of pressure on me as a reader!
Avatar 1:52pm
herb.nyc:

i just googled the descrip of BLUEBEARD, and it mentions a sexy woman meeting older man. yeah, i could go for that (and it's kinda Dave Hill-ian, in ref to SHIT HAPPENS' spokesmodel Becky Boggs and her destined meeting with dave.)

I always thought Slapstick was a good introduction. But maybe that's just because it was the first KV that I read.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm

slapstick IS a good introduction! it was mine too and it's one of my 3 faves, so far. Galapagos is the other; and at first that asterisk thing bothered me, because it was like Vonnegut was the spoiler! then our eyes met, i guess, because it somehow enhanced the tale.
