Hello Marcel! I am sorry I missed your show at the Acheron last week. I am too embarrassingly broke to do anything, and it sucks!

Thank you, Rich, for a perfect soundtrack for my Friday night of scanning in a mountain of ancient family photos while the pills kick in.

Jake: It's frustrating that nobody else in my family seems to care about the photos. They were all left in the basement where it gets moldy. I'm excited though, because I found a Great Aunt who seems to have had the same health problems as me! She even looks like me!
  1:57am
Tamar:

Once you started playing that PiL song. I thought, "Oh, he's gonna play Sleater-Kinney next."
  1:57am
JakeGould:

@Fox(Rā-chul): It is frustrating. I won’t get into a long story past saying that the photos I scanned went through a lot and some of the worthless relatives I stole (yes, stole) them from honestly told me “Who cares?” And if I mentioned younger kids in the family, they would even say, “They won’t care.” That’s [art of the reason I stole back some of my family history; some relatives who still are around would be more than happy to let the photos burn or rot. So this is a sad/common story… So you are doing great work! Don’t let the weight of idiots put you down! Always preserve the past.

Fox (Rā-chul):

Jake: are you the black sheep of the family as well? I am, and I imagine that has something to do with why I care so much about the history of a family that others are part of and take for granted. I sort of stole these photos as well. I knew nobody would bother to scan them and share them with the rest of the family, and they'd just get lost. Frustrating.

Fox (Rā-chul):

I uncovered a secret wedding that my family kept quiet about. Seems a Great Aunt of mine that we all knew as a spinster had actually been married. Sadly, her husband left her after a few months and remarried, but she being a dutiful Catholic, never touched another man. The photographs are beautiful and tragic.
  2:07am
JakeGould:

@Fox(Rā-chul): Pretty much. My siblings are decades older than me and are assholes. Both divorces and—this is key—both of them after degraded into being religious nuts. The key issue is the religious loons they basically are advised that anything they do to put their secular life behind them is acceptable. Thus the neglect of these photos. I have nephews and nieces who are in different stages of coming to terms with their parent’s insanity and I am the black sheep and quite possibly the only person who can ever talk rationally to them about the family past.

So yeah, cool you are doing this. And it can be exhausting but keep it up! History gets destroyed every day and many family’s are denying their own family access to that history. Some sick people out there.

Fox (Rā-chul):

Jake: You scanned in the backs of the photos? Was that because of awesome old card photographs with stuff like this on the back: www.flickr.com... (if you can see it?) Man, I love those old fancy photographs!
Avatar 2:11am
Fox (Rā-chul):

(I'm never going to reproduce, so I'm not sure why I'm the one who cares about this stuff. But then, I also think it's weird that people with kids aren't more concerned with Global Warming.
  2:12am
JakeGould:

@Fox: Yeah, I scanned the backs because either they were truly old school photos with details on the back that are important for context. Or even modern photos where relatives simply places basic date/context info on the back.

I’ve worked for museums so I understand the value of scanning “ipso” and “verso” of works. Details that might not seem important now might be years from now.
  2:13am
JakeGould:

Verso/Recto? It’s late. Ipso-not-so-awake.
  2:18am
JakeGould:

@Fox(Rā-chul): FWIW you might not have children, but honestly if a relative pops up out of nowhere to ask about family stuff and such… There you go… Piles of scans…
Avatar 2:23am
Fox (Rā-chul):

Jake: Luckily, there's a facebook group of a branch of my dad's family that still lives in the same town in NJ where they all started. All of my Great Grandparents were immigrants, so it only goes back so far. I was able to ask them some questions about relatives, and I'll share the photos with them after this huge batch is scanned in, and hopefully get me some answers. I've a dream of getting a camper and traveling the country to visit all of my relatives and scanning in all of their old family photos. Even though they don't like me. :)
