Irwin. Marcus Aurelius had it tied down, if I may quote my favourite of the little I have read of his.

And you have forgotten this too, that every man's mind is god and has flowed from that source; that nothing is our own property, but even our child, our body, our very soul have come from that source; that all is as thinking makes it so; that each of us lives our lives only in the present moment, and the present moment is all we lose.

Joe's wife Michal posted yesterday that he's been taken off IV anticoagulants and is gaining weight. She sounds encouraged that the "ordeal which began on December 12" may be over. Friends and admirers have pledged over $88K to cover his medical expenses.

She also confirms that Joe's been working on a script for a new show. Despite proceeding "in fits and starts" during his illness, she expects he'll have "a draft ready for final edit" very soon. Something to look forward to.

Lyle:

I remember a brief tour with Hamilton, Joe Frank, and Reynolds in the late 70's. By then, I was getting pretty old to be on the road. I went through a couple of tubes of Ben-Gay a week just to be able to do the choreography required of the brass section during the show. Hamilton was nice enough. He also played bass for Aerosmith, so he wasn't uptight about money. Reynolds was Debbie's grandson and he was a pain in the you-know-what. He thought he should get the star treatment because his grandma was famous. Joe Frank was a bit of an oddball as I recall. When he wasn't singing in the band, he was writing his little stories, or he was collecting butterflies for his expansive collection (which he insisted upon bringing with him on the bus). Anyway, one afternoon we were sitting at a red light in Anderson, Indiana when Joe swore he saw an Ornithoptera croesus. "Stop the bus!" he shouted, and the driver ignored him. Well, Joe got mad. It was a very rare butterfly and Joe desperately wanted it for his collection. The band, however, was late for a gig at Six Flags and the driver was bound and determined to get them there on time. Joe knew it was now or never. In an instant, he opened a bus window, crawled through the opening, and dropped to the pavement below from the moving vehicle, which by this time was doing atleast 50 mph. He received multiple scrapes and bruises in the process, but with one perfectly timed lunge, he caught his butterfly. Eventually it was set in an acrylic mold which was used to make the body of Joe's custom-made bass guitar. He quit the band about a year later. People come and go from bands with regularity. I never got used to that fact.
