Greetings dear listeners! I hope you can pledge tonight to support WFMU!

If you pledge to my show right here, as usual I've made a custom conceptual world music cd for everyone who pledges $75 or more.

This year's custom cd is Transpacific Sound Paradise presents Electro-Planet - from Turkish psych to Balkan beats, Thai mor lam to Ethiopian grooves, global traditions amped up for the modern world!

“TSP

Of course, if my cd doesn't float your boat you can choose a different DJ's premium (cd or otherwise) instead. You can see the full list of DJ CD premiums at https://wfmu.org/dj-premiums/.

I've hit THE BIG THREE-OH! How better to celebrate than with a 30 dollar a month sustaining pledge!

I’m celebrating my 30th anniversary on WFMU! Who’d a thunk it? And if you are in a good place economically, perhaps you’ll consider celebrating the anniversary by making a $30 per month sustaining Swag For Life pledge.

If you do, you cup shall runneth over with WFMU swag EVERY year! This year you’ll receive our spanking new Party Lights Zip Hoodie, your choice of SEVEN DJ Premiums and you’ll get to choose one bonus past or present Marathon prize from our Prize Warehouse! And you’ll receive a similar batch of goodies every year as long as you remain a Swag for Lifer.

But any amount you can pledge is most fabulous and wonderful. And it just takes a $20 pledge to get our fab new bumper sticker AND get in the running for a prize drawing for one of the great cds I'm giving away to lucky pledgers this evening!

And you can peruse the fabulous swag on offer station-wide at various pledge levels - our beautiful new t-shirt, hoodie, sticker and more - at https://wfmu.org/swag.

Thanks!

We day dwellers miss Irene in the morning!!
  6:13pm Listener Robert:

Mr. Sinister, I actually met Duke Snyder. No, not the baseballer, but the actor (monstly in pornies IIRC) who took the same name. It was to promote a movie he & other attendees had been in, "The Ghosts of Angela Webb".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm Doug Schulkind:

Happy anniversary, Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Irene Trudel:

Aw, thanks Brian! Sorry I'm not on during the daytime anymore but there's always the archives.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:23pm Irene Trudel:

Rob's offering the great Ethiopiques 24 compilation-- You'll get in the drawing for a pledge as small as $20.

what's the name of the song from ayelew mesfin? 10x irene in advance
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:43pm Rob W:

Hi Fre - sorry about that, documentation is not as good as usual during my Marathon shows, but the track was Teredjew Neber by Ayelew Mesfin, taken off Ethiopiques 24 comp (Buda Musique).
  6:44pm Taratortuga:

Thanks for another year of the best sounds in the world!

Perhaps Robert, perhaps...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:08pm Irene Trudel:

Get in the running for this fabulous CD of Cumbias-- "The Afrosound of Columbia." Pledge at wfmu.org or 1-800-989-9368.
  7:15pm Listener Robert:

Why not? On YouTube the ads have ads! Lots of people have apparently pirated TV commercials that they figure someone would be interested in seeing, and which usually the copyright holder doesn't mind people seeing, and then preceded them with bona fide advertisements!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Irene Trudel:

Here's my pic of Tony B inside WFMU's Swag room. Something in there could be yours simply by pledging to WFMU.org or 1-800-989-9368. flic.kr...
  7:17pm Listener Robert:

My point being not that WFMU would be improved by selling ads, but that people are interested enough in hearing & seeing ads (usually old ones) that whoever's presenting them tries to monetize that popularity. So if TPSP played ads in various languages, they might be interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Robert, we actually can't air ads because we're a licensed non-commercial station. we are allowed by the Federal Communications Commission to read underwriting, but it's a very different thing. (Underwiting can mention a names/ places /things but no call to action-- no "call now, or to to xxxstore.) We at WFMU choose not to air underwiting because of the on-air clutter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Irene Trudel:

Up as a prize now-- Omar Souleyman's "Haflat Gharbia - The Western Concerts" Only three people in the running for this great prize!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm Irene Trudel:

Don't forget, Rob is offering a great compilation CD for pledges of $75 or more-- "Electro Planet" I'm always amazed at the wonderful music Rob finds from all over the world to bring to your ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:36pm Ĩkє:

I think L.R. is talking about non-paying ads played out of sociological interest... and indeed, hasn't Sinner's Crossroads played old southern AM local radio ads for clairvoyants and such? I don't know if Kevin still does that, but those are wild.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yeowzie! In just 24 hours, we'll be in the midst of the annual Hoof 'n' Mouth Sinfonia. Keep pledging so the station reaches $1.2M by midnight tomorrow.

PARTY TIME
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Has anyone pitched the angle that the swag that folks can earn/win could make great presents to their friends and relatives? Could be an incentive to pull in some more pledges.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm Īke:

Based on what the mailings say, Swag for Life is a minimum of $10/month ($120 total) and there's no option to split up $75 into per-month increments... que es "$7 per week"?! ...sorry, the proofreading urge is strong. In the printouts hanging up in the phone room, somebody must've accidentally deleted "$10/mo. ($120 total)" next to the words "Swag for Life".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm Rob W:

Current prize up for grabs is Tinariwen Live from Paris - get in the running with a pledge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm Ĩkє:

...thus leading to some understandable confusion. Anyway, PLEDGE NOW, you damn dirty punks! Stop screwing around! What you are waiting for, the apocalypse?! DO IT NOW!!!!!
Avatar 8:00pm Caryn:

@Ike: 7 bucks a week is basically a Mouse pledge, but said a bit differently from the usual 30 bucks a month. Not sure how it's kinda being mixed with the 75 dollar one-time pledge here... Except that those are both good pledge levels, so pledge, people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Rob W:

Oops - yes, I mean $7 per MONTH = a premium-sized swag for life pledge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Irene Trudel:

The new Tinariwen could be yours for with a pledge of as little as $20. However, as Ike says, we'd love to get a few more Swag for Life pledges. These are paid monthly, starting with $10 a month. That's not even my weekly coffee budget!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:14pm Ken From Hyde Park:

You're probably too busy for questions now, but I'm wondering what new Cuban sounds will find their way here now that we're opening up relations with that island nation. I see President Obama is visiting there tomorrow.
Avatar 🌍 8:21pm slugluv1313:

AH! Rob and Irene, i guess my household is making up for your current low-kitty-numbers, hah!
FINALLY got to pledge to your show, YAY!
now everybody else needs to PLEDGE too!!!
(@ Ike -- oh can i EVER relate to the proofreading urge!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Irene Trudel:

How many kitties, slugluv???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm Rob W:

Thanks slugluv! Ken - things have already opened up a bit with Cuban artists but yes, there will be a lot more. I think it might be as much about how Cuban music changes with more connection the US and more musicians from both places going back and forth as they might to Puerto Rico or South America - we'll see I guess...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Irene Trudel:

Oh, and thanks so much for the pledge!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:24pm Irene Trudel:

Yeah, Rob--when do we do our first remote from Cuba???
Avatar 🌍 8:28pm slugluv1313:

@ Irene -- six of my own -- plus four foster kitties! (i know -- YIKES!)
and that was my question too: when will you be doing live remotes from Cuba?
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:32pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I think that might have been Jenna from Finland, aka Listener Caryn (FI, not Fl).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Irene Trudel:

Wowee, slugluv! Peter and I were up to 5 kitties and it was pandemonium. But we love 'em! Cuba, it's just a thought, but you never know! Glad the opportunity is open for us to go in any case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm Irene Trudel:

Ah, thanks for clarifying Ken.
Avatar 8:34pm Caryn:

@Ken from HP: it's a little problem with the new system (I'm assuming, since this never happened with the old one). Whether it's a US state or a foreign country, it's just given the two-letter abbreviation, and if the country abbreviation resembles any state abbreviation, that's what the DJs go with.
  8:37pm Carmichael:

Heya Rob. Dig the Tuvan singing.
  8:39pm Listener Robert:

Ike understood what I meant. It's not an actual ad if it's not placed with the intention of advertising. The ads on YouTube have been repurposed for entertainment or research. The ads ON the ads on YouTube -- THOSE are actual paid ads!

On that score, there's at least one time I know of that the copyright holder of ads objected to their reprod'n: when LaRouche's magazine, Executive Intelligence Review, had replica ads to make it APPEAR that they'd been paid for. The original advertisers were not pleased!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:42pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@Caryn - Yep. Hopefully, by the next pledge period, there will be a box to select the country. WFMU has lots of listeners from around the world, so it'd certainly make sense to have the pledger's country recorded.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:43pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good gosh! 96%...the goal is in reach!
Avatar 8:45pm Caryn:

Hah, I'm now listening via the ustream.

@Ken from HP: there's already a box for that on the actual form, but US pledgers get e.g. "DE, US" on the print-out, and foreign pledgers get just e.g. "DE", and DJs can easily get confused with that. And so German pledgers end up being from Delaware (or occasionally from Denmark).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Irene Trudel:

We're in the final minutes of Rob's show. Please show him how much you appreciate what he does with a pledge to wfmu.org or 1-800-989-9368!
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Reached the goal...yay! Nicely done. Thanks a lot, Rob & Irene. Looking forward to the show tomorrow night.
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Bas NL:

Congratulations Rob, Irene!
Avatar 8:58pm Caryn:
