RE: Elaine May, it wasn't just "Ishtar", she also had a good deal of trouble with "A New Leaf" (also hilarious), turning in a 3-hour cut that the studio had to prune down to a manageable length. And on "Mikey and Nicky" she fired her DP for no good reason, shot tons of film, and took a long time to edit that too. She's very talented but she needed a strong producing partner IMHO.

American experimental films using improvisation in part. Not plot driven; it's the way the actors play off each other that's compelling. Hope you dig 'em.

But in undergrad and grad school from 1996-2009, pretty much every linguist I met was militantly descriptivist, and I was expected to be the same.

	5:21pm Dean: Richard Meltzer needs to be added to that list of DJs. His show at KPFK during the late '70s, early '80s, was pretty darn splendid.
	5:21pm Cliff: The whole prescriptivism-vs-descriptivism thang dates from the 1910s-1940s when structuralist linguistics was trying to overthrow the old fuddie-duddies in the classics and anthropology departments. Then Chomsky came along in the 50s and shook everyone up by accusing the structuralists of being too enamored with methodology over theory, that started the structuralist-vs-generativist wars.

	5:28pm Cliff: Then some of Chomsky's students revolted in the early 70's, that started the generative-vs-functionalist split in linguistics. Umberto Eco said that the different schools of linguistics are organized like Western Christendom, there's one big faction following the Pope (that would be the generative linguists with Chomsky as their spiritual head) and a variety of denominations who take issue with one or another points of doctrine (that would be the various functionalist schools that sprung up on the West coast of the US)
	5:28pm coelacanth: "rate you dj" is not just a stunt, even if it was created to be one. people do, and will take it seriously. it's BULLSHIT!
	5:28pm Rich in Washington: I had made this tape when I was a teenager of this weird dude on the radio - KBOO - playing records from all over the world, really outrageous stuff but one day, I was hard up for tape and used it to tape something else, almost completely taping over the previous show - then, after a few months, realized it was Jello Biafra, guesting at the last minute on someone's show.

	5:30pm Dean: The show was "Hepcats from Hell," and it aired, iirc, from midnight on Fridays or Saturdays. Featured mostly punk, although I remember during a visit his playing either a Cabaret Voltaire or Wire-related EP. Before dropping the needle he said something like,"This tune is kinda long, about fifteen minutes." He plays the record and seconds after it finishes the phone rings. (This is sometime around 2:00 a.m.) He takes the call on-air. The caller reports, "It was 17 minutes, 18 seconds." Also, he wrote a poem about his gig at KPFK. The station was then, probably remains, dysfunctional, sometimes charmingly so.
	5:30pm TDK60: The best DJs I ever heard were on WFMU & WBAI in the 1960s and early '70s. And WFMU today has mucho good ones. I won't rate specifically tho.
	5:33pm coelacanth: ...and we'll have people who,in my ever so humble opinion, shouldn't even have air time on wfmu climbing the ratings ladder because they're cute (or very much think they are) or flirty. ...way to dummy-down wfmu.
	5:34pm Cliff: Anyways, that's all I know about the history of academic linguistics. I remember at the end of my grad program in 2009 Dan Everett (who has the same birthday as me according to Wikipedia, July 26th, wow! Mick Jagger too! anyways....) was causing a shitstorm with his recent papers about the Pirahã language spoken in the Amazon.

The sort of thing that makes Rating them sound like a stunt to me... My descriptive of Gaylord: ...All the FMU-Js impress w/ their knowledge & good taste in Music ...but perhaps of them all - Gaylord Fields most particularly represents the idea - & the actuality - of the DJ as Artist himself. He obliterates any imagined contradiction of HighBrow vs. LowBrow in the most graceful & natural way. His level of being Informed of the range & specifics of Musics is this great. He has stated his method is spontaneous - so this must be so. He refers to Cinema & clearly often favors Soundtracks - & like a Director his segues & sequencing & flow create a kind of blanket of feelings & narrative that settles on the whole Program - & the listeners' moods...
	5:39pm Dean: So it goes with those Pacifica stations. I was in LA during the reign of Mark Chubb as GM. OMG, what a fucking mess. He wanted to turn the station into an ever so slightly barely edgier NPR, cancelled all the killer programming. Up here KPFA is having trouble, too. I do hope they can survive.

The Masters for his 2nd album sit in a room somewhere next to the Galaghers' - & he has zero access to them...

RE: Elaine May, it wasn't just "Ishtar", she also had a good deal of trouble with "A New Leaf" (also hilarious), turning in a 3-hour cut that the studio had to prune down to a manageable length. And on "Mikey and Nicky" she fired her DP for no good reason, shot tons of film, and took a long time to edit that too. She's very talented but she needed a strong producing partner IMHO.

	5:21pm Cliff: The whole prescriptivism-vs-descriptivism thang dates from the 1910s-1940s when structuralist linguistics was trying to overthrow the old fuddie-duddies in the classics and anthropology departments. Then Chomsky came along in the 50s and shook everyone up by accusing the structuralists of being too enamored with methodology over theory, that started the structuralist-vs-generativist wars.

	5:28pm Cliff: Then some of Chomsky's students revolted in the early 70's, that started the generative-vs-functionalist split in linguistics. Umberto Eco said that the different schools of linguistics are organized like Western Christendom, there's one big faction following the Pope (that would be the generative linguists with Chomsky as their spiritual head) and a variety of denominations who take issue with one or another points of doctrine (that would be the various functionalist schools that sprung up on the West coast of the US)

	5:28pm Rich in Washington: I had made this tape when I was a teenager of this weird dude on the radio - KBOO - playing records from all over the world, really outrageous stuff but one day, I was hard up for tape and used it to tape something else, almost completely taping over the previous show - then, after a few months, realized it was Jello Biafra, guesting at the last minute on someone's show.

	5:30pm Dean: The show was "Hepcats from Hell," and it aired, iirc, from midnight on Fridays or Saturdays. Featured mostly punk, although I remember during a visit his playing either a Cabaret Voltaire or Wire-related EP. Before dropping the needle he said something like,"This tune is kinda long, about fifteen minutes." He plays the record and seconds after it finishes the phone rings. (This is sometime around 2:00 a.m.) He takes the call on-air. The caller reports, "It was 17 minutes, 18 seconds." Also, he wrote a poem about his gig at KPFK. The station was then, probably remains, dysfunctional, sometimes charmingly so.
	5:30pm TDK60: The best DJs I ever heard were on WFMU & WBAI in the 1960s and early '70s. And WFMU today has mucho good ones. I won't rate specifically tho.

I remember at the end of my grad program in 2009 Dan Everett (who has the same birthday as me according to Wikipedia, July 26th, wow! The sort of thing that makes Rating them sound like a stunt to me... My descriptive of Gaylord: ...All the FMU-Js impress w/ their knowledge & good taste in Music ...but perhaps of them all - Gaylord Fields most particularly represents the idea - & the actuality - of the DJ as Artist himself. He obliterates any imagined contradiction of HighBrow vs. LowBrow in the most graceful & natural way. His level of being Informed of the range & specifics of Musics is this great. He has stated his method is spontaneous - so this must be so. He refers to Cinema & clearly often favors Soundtracks - & like a Director his segues & sequencing & flow create a kind of blanket of feelings & narrative that settles on the whole Program - & the listeners' moods...
	5:39pm Dean: So it goes with those Pacifica stations. I was in LA during the reign of Mark Chubb as GM. OMG, what a fucking mess. He wanted to turn the station into an ever so slightly barely edgier NPR, cancelled all the killer programming. Up here KPFA is having trouble, too. I do hope they can survive.
