	12:53pm Goyim in the AM: coelacanth -- different beast, 801 is more the first example of chops dudes playing punk that would later bring us the first wave of American hardcore.

	12:55pm northguineahills: Playing all of the hits from when I finally learned to like pop music.
	12:58pm northguineahills: My brain has been playing a brass marching band version of VU's "What's Going ON" for the last week. Now I just need a brass marching band and an arranger.
	12:59pm Dean: 801 is something of a Rorschach test. I first heard it in the context of progressive rock, featured on a show devoted to the genre. Never occurred to me it prompted hardcore, but yeah, that makes sense, too.

	1:07pm Parq: The way I remember 801 is as part of a transition from progressive rock represented by the likes of Genesis and Strawbs to the more out-there stuff represented by Eno. It was kind of a coming of age thing for me. From there, I went to folks like Pere Ubu and the Residents, and mainstream college-town stuff got left behind once and for all.

	1:09pm coelacanth: hmm. i see little connection between 801 live and hardcore. ..actually i never thought of Eno or 801 in relation to even punk rock. - i never thought of either as prog rock either.

	1:13pm coelacanth: pressed, i guess i might, for the moment, say 801 fused progressive rock, progressive jazz, and pop.

	1:15pm Dean: I heard 801 as a casual outing by former Roxy Music and connected personnel having fun with pop forms. The progressive legacy was there, albeit not the wispy Genesis variety. At the time they were neither progressive nor pop "enough" for me. (There's a pun embedded in that adverb.) I enjoy it much more now than I did when it was released.

	1:17pm Goyim in the AM: I think the connection between prog and hardcore isn't really audible all of the time, but it's there in the interviews and in my own experience. Lots of Yes and King Crimson fans. The Replacements started as a Yes cover band.

	1:20pm Dean: "The Replacements started as a Yes cover band," is the most funny thing I've heard so far all day. I had no idea Yes went through a phase of chronic drunkenness, passing out on stage, fighting, throwing up...

	1:24pm Dean: Point taken. I only ever try to play Close to the Edge after I'm sauced. As I recall, it's always note perfect. Who among us has not played a KISS cover?
	1:24pm Uncle Michael: This band sounded lots of ways. This is my fifth go at them. man, Ken's played them a ton.

	1:25pm coelacanth: i bought 801 because it said "Eno" on it. i'd never heard of it and didn't really know Roxy music. i guess that's why i was slightly disappointed. it doesn't have the depth of Eno's studio albums. it seemed like they's just learned the songs and hastily made new arrangements that weren't as good as the original conceptions. ...but, i still like it a lot, and especially TNK.

	1:31pm Dean: TNK was the prog rock show rotation tune, for sure. Have heard "In and Around Greg Lake," and the title alone always provokes a chuckle. For Yes, a 1970 Siberian Khatru, which, believe me, has a kick on it like a mule. "Black Diamond," that's the KISS tune I've played.

	🛒 1:36pm Brian in UK: First Yes album was OK (just). Saw them in 1969 Jon Hendrick came on stage and scat sang with Jon Anderson for a couple of numbers. Surprised me. The Who headlined, need I say anymore.

	1:39pm Alex In Illinois: I recall Danielle Dax recording a version of TNK that had part of Talking Head's Once in a Lifetime groove sample in it. I understand the urge to put lots of layers into that song, so it was refreshing to hear the Junior Parker version

	12:58pm northguineahills: My brain has been playing a brass marching band version of VU's "What's Going ON" for the last week. Now I just need a brass marching band and an arranger.
	12:59pm Dean: 801 is something of a Rorschach test. I first heard it in the context of progressive rock, featured on a show devoted to the genre. Never occurred to me it prompted hardcore, but yeah, that makes sense, too.

	1:07pm Parq: The way I remember 801 is as part of a transition from progressive rock represented by the likes of Genesis and Strawbs to the more out-there stuff represented by Eno. It was kind of a coming of age thing for me. From there, I went to folks like Pere Ubu and the Residents, and mainstream college-town stuff got left behind once and for all.

	1:15pm Dean: I heard 801 as a casual outing by former Roxy Music and connected personnel having fun with pop forms. The progressive legacy was there, albeit not the wispy Genesis variety. At the time they were neither progressive nor pop "enough" for me. (There's a pun embedded in that adverb.) I enjoy it much more now than I did when it was released.

	1:25pm coelacanth: i bought 801 because it said "Eno" on it. i'd never heard of it and didn't really know Roxy music. i guess that's why i was slightly disappointed. it doesn't have the depth of Eno's studio albums. it seemed like they's just learned the songs and hastily made new arrangements that weren't as good as the original conceptions. ...but, i still like it a lot, and especially TNK.
