Yup, they wrote “After Hours” and then after it was made—or maybe during the production—Joe Frank got word of it and then they settled it out of court for some substantial compensation.

  1:22am
JakeGould:

This sums it up: “The project was called ‘A Night in Soho’ and it was based on the script by Joseph Minion. The screenplay, originally titled ‘Lies’ after the 1982 Joe Frank monologue that inspired the story, was written as part of an assignment for his film course at Columbia University. He was 26 years old at the time the film was produced. The script finally became ‘After Hours’ after Scorsese made his final amendments.” en.wikipedia.org...
  1:23am
JakeGould:

So basically a film student rips of a Joe Frank story, it gets attention and he doesn’t tell anyone and then Joe Frank finds out and sued. Also, I believe this is the exact episode that was the basis of the script. www.joefrank.com...
  1:26am
Steve-O:

@slowbear: Hope your dog gets better, man. =(
  1:26am
rw:

Thanks Jake! I had heard the film was stolen from Joe Frank and that there had been some controversy or law suit. I remember liking the film. I'm curious to hear the original. Might be worth the $9.00.
  1:27am
JakeGould:

Actually this is a better summary. Includes the audio of the episode. andrewhearst.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39am

Got the link to work. Thanks Jake!
I wonder what it would be like to know you lifted portions of a script and then see it turn into a Scorsese film.
  2:02am
JakeGould:

@rw: Anger at your work being ripped off and calm in knowing the ripoff is so clear and such plagiarism that you can see $$$ signs in your eyes. At the end of the day everyone benefited.

JakeGould:

@rw: Hard to say when someone is a student and does that. Maybe they learned that that’s how “the game” is played and they got busted? I mean Joseph Minion is not a household name but it doesn’t seem that revelation ended his career. Far from it. The desire for fame and power is a crazy thing.

@rw: Focusing on respect in creative endeavors is the best long term solution. Most people don't get rich in creative pursuits so consistent respect earns respect and consistent work. At least that's how I see it.
