Evening, Super Bowl fans.

JakeGould:

I have a “New Order” for the Panthers… Take a walk, Panthers because YOU SUCK! USA! USA! USA!
  10:02pm
PMD:

I thought this sounded like a new wave. Hi!
Avatar 10:08pm
Dave Mandl:

Greetings PMD, Jake. Yeah, a big New Wave opening to the show tonight.
  10:09pm
JakeGould:

Anyone here read the Richard Hell memoir? He talks about what jerk he was to Lizzy Mercier Descloux and how it snapped him out of being a d-bag.
Avatar 10:11pm
Dave Mandl:

I bought it when it came out (around a year ago), still haven't read it!
  10:13pm
JakeGould:

It’s a good read. Won’t spoil anymore but very nice reflections on how he treated some people and the things he saw/did.
Avatar 10:13pm
Howard F:

Haven't heard this African Head Charge track in a while, sounds great!
Avatar 10:14pm
Dave Mandl:

@Howard: Yeah, this is probably my favorite AHC record. Just reissued!

hi all!

What up!
Avatar 10:16pm
Dave Mandl:

Evening, melinda, Eric.

Pete L:

Where did u find a Ronnie Boykins recording. I thought i was hip
Saturn? Label not planet ha ha
Avatar 10:20pm
Dave Mandl:

@Pete: It's an ESP-Disk release. Reissued on CD a few years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm
coelacanth:

hello Dave and all
  10:21pm
Pete L:

Richard Heck sounded like he was wasted when Todd O phone interviewed him i swear
  10:24pm
JakeGould:

@PeteL: You mean this interview? He always sounds mush mouthed. wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm
coelacanth:

did richard h.e. double toothpick really change his name again?

Dave Mandl:

Hi coelecanth.
Avatar 10:30pm
Dave Mandl:

Wow, how did I miss that Todd interview? I need to listen to that. I saw him read/talk at the Strand when I bought his book.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
joeray:

The Starker performance of the Bach Cello Suites on Mercury Living Presence are also highly regarded.
Avatar 10:34pm
Dave Mandl:

@joeray: OK, good to know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm
melinda:

A great title for an organ piece.
  10:48pm
PMD:

In current music do they clean out the finger slide tweaks in the guitar? Or are they just louder in this track?
Avatar 10:51pm
Dave Mandl:

@PMD: Good question. I'm not sure. Today there's a good chance they'd "clean up" that stuff. I don't see any reason to do it, but that's just me.
Avatar 10:52pm
Alejandroool:

those finger slide sounds are always noisier on acoustic guitars - also depends where the mic was placed too I imagine..
  10:55pm
PMD:

@Alejandroool yes I know re acoustic but not many (any?) current tracks that loud.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm
melinda:

Freakwater will be good.
Avatar 11:01pm
Alejandroool:

@PMD I'm not knowledgable enough but I imagine they can eliminate the sound/frequency easily nowadays...
Avatar 11:02pm
Alejandroool:

also perhaps depends if using an acoustic pickup/direct in vs. mic'd ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm
coelacanth:

as Aleja said about mic placement but also playing technique and even how rough the fingers are. i think often skilled guitarists can play without doin it but do it intentionally.
Avatar 11:03pm
Dave Mandl:

@melinda: Agreed.
Avatar 11:04pm
Dave Mandl:

@coelacanth: Yeah, it depends on a lot of things, including the kind of strings you're using. The (bass guitar) strings I use can be noisy, but I think it's OK.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth:

and yeah, the type of mic too, how it's eqed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05pm
coelacanth:

Dave, you use round wound?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
coelacanth:

(i'm sure you mean materials as well...i'm just asking)
Avatar 11:09pm
Dave Mandl:

@coelacanth: Yup. Rotosounds. Stainless steel. They're extremely bright.
  11:09pm
Pete L:

This is great. I havent heard that many guys do something with Don Cherry and Lester Bowie, Haden and Holland too i think. Adam Lane eh?
Avatar 11:11pm
Dave Mandl:

@Pete: Yeah, really excellent CD. TBH, the best tracks are very long, too long to play on my show. But the whole disc is good.
Avatar 11:11pm
Alejandroool:

I put Rotosounds on this P-Bass I recently got - so Entwistle... I use "Half-rounds" on my Rickenbacker...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
coelacanth:

Dave i'm a little surprised! i like your bass playing! maybe your technique compliments those strings because i often don't much like the sounds gotten from round, potentially twangy, bass strings.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth:

...i'm not very knowledged after all. maybe i think i don't usually like those strings because of players like Flea Les Claypool. (even though i like primus,in general, somehow!)
Avatar 11:17pm
Dave Mandl:

@coelacanth: Thanks! Personally I don't like flatwound strings at all. I've pretty much never used them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17pm
coelacanth:

(that is "Flea AND Les...")
Avatar 11:18pm
Alejandroool:

Dave - I think I missed your band featured recently live, is there a link? I'm not a fan of flatwounds much either, no sustain
Avatar 11:18pm
Dave Mandl:

@coelacanth: I don't want to plug Rorosound strings here, but pretty much all my favorite bass players ever have used them.
Avatar 11:20pm
Dave Mandl:

@Alejandrool: I don't feel comfortable talking about it here, but the band is playing on someone's show here at FMU very soon. Hasn't happened yet.
Avatar 11:21pm
Alejandroool:

fair! thought I missed it.. cool - will keep an ear/eye out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm
coelacanth:

i special-ordered flat-wound strings, but i'm not skilled and don't want my technical shortcomings blaring!

A, tomorrow on Joe B.

Dave, who are you favorite bassists?
Avatar 11:22pm
Alejandroool:

All these tunes are a great Sunday 'eve wind-down for me...
Avatar 11:29pm
Dave Mandl:

@coelacanth: Off the top of my head, I guess Entwistle, John Wetton, Jack Casady, Percy Jones would be some of the big ones.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
coelacanth:

so, they all use round-wound? i've been ignorant! i would've guessed that for Percy Jones only. (and i think i'd heard it about Entwistle)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
coelacanth:

i listened to 3 jethro tull albums in a row today!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Andrew Waterloo:

I don't remember anyone outside of the fretless world using flats.
Avatar 11:37pm
Dave Mandl:

Wetton and Entwistle were both heavy Rotosound guys. Percy I'm not sure about, but good chance of it.
Avatar 11:37pm
Dave Mandl:

@coelacanth: Oh my. Three of them?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Mary Wing played an hour's worth of "Locomotive Breath" covers this morning.
Avatar 11:38pm
Dave Mandl:

@Andrew: Classic flatwound sound would be someone like James Jamerson, who of course was great.
Avatar 11:38pm
Dave Mandl:

@Ken: Serious? Sorry I missed that.
  11:39pm
rw:

Hang on... coelacanth, did you say you like Primus? I looked them up because an acquaintance of mine did a poster for them. Can't say I was particularly impressed.
  11:39pm
rw:

Oh, and hello!!
  11:40pm
josh:

Hey just gotta say your choice of music selection has been pretty incredible man, been listening to wfmu for a while and never caught your show, definitely gonna check it out from now on
  11:40pm
JakeGould:

I remember when everyone was into Primus in college and I just said… Nope… Not for me!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Andrew Waterloo:

@Dave, that makes sense. For some reason I always figured that was more to do with the amp.
Avatar 11:42pm
Alejandroool:

if ya haven't seen/heard that isolated Entwistle bass of live Who - don't get fooled again, it's on the youtubs - always impresses
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
coelacanth:

hey rw! yes, some! (i definitely dislike some too.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
coelacanth:

i'm nearly sure McCartney used flat-wound strings...and Jack Bruce?
Avatar 11:43pm
Dave Mandl:

@josh: Hi, and thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

It's true, Dave, but not all of them had flutes.
Avatar 11:44pm
Dave Mandl:

And hi, rw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm
Andrew Waterloo:

Primus is one of those bands that really hits you when you're younger.
  11:44pm
rw:

Ha! It's okay. We won't hold it against you.

Enjoying the bass geek-out chatter though I have no idea what y'all are talking about.

Hey Dave!
Avatar 11:45pm
Dave Mandl:

@Ken: I've got to look that up. I can't always hear Mary live because of the wimpy hours I keep.
Avatar 11:50pm
Dave Mandl:

Sorry about the geeking out. Just answering questions. I try to avoid the tech-talk usually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
coelacanth:

regarding 10-of-a-kind, none of them were even a shadow of the original locomotive breath, and some were pretty awful!
-entertaining though!

...rw, i've only heard primus on about 4 occasions; about 15 songs total. yes, i enjoyed at least 5 songs.(which are "untitled" and i don't know how they got on my computer.)
i don't know what i'll think of it a month from now!
Avatar 11:55pm
Alejandroool:

this is a great sounding set DM - excellent for right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
coelacanth:

one last point: i think i like the muddy flat-wound sound because it's the sound i grew up with, with all the 60s' bands.
  11:56pm
rw:

While we're on Primus and bass geek-out, I have a friend who's in his later 30s and hates all bass when it gets slappy. That sound doesn't bother me so much but he grew up at a time when Red Hot Chili Peppers was the music all the high school jocks listened to.

Re: the whole bass strings thing - Makes sense, there's that Rotosound "ad" on The Who Sell Out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
coelacanth:

i generally agree with you friend!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58pm
coelacanth:

..."your" friend, rw!

Midnight on the east coast! Happy Chinese New Year! Thanks Dave!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm

Thanks Dave!
see y'all.
