Hey folks, hope you're having a nice evening. I'm here filling in for my pal MAC. Hope you'll stick with me as we listen to some country, some Indian sounds, and some blues/gospel.

Old Timey Surface Noise!

Hey Joe! Glad to be listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm

I've heard "Pan American [Blues]" before, this is a legendary harmonica piece from the '20s. I love it!

I presume that MAC has an old-timey snowblower that's like ninety years old. It'll be a couple more days until his driveway is cleared out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Joe McG:

Ah, Jake, how can we forget him. I'll talk about that next mic break.
  8:12pm
Listener Robert:

The amazing thing about this little stn. is that so many of you, both at the mic & behind the guys at the mic, are so well versed in so many types of recorded matter & have such resources to draw on that you can do something like this.

@Ken HP: Like an old silent slapstick, it will probably be some big, tubey grammophone like contraption that won't start, and when it does, hardly moves through the snow. MAC will kick it, and then it will start zooming through the snow, chasing him...

Rev. Turnip Druid:

A nice surprise, this fill-in. Rare that I can tune in at this hour. Somehow a couple of snow-days turned into extra hours via telework. But headphones bring salvation. And harmonicas.

Rev. Turnip Druid:

JOE: got anything with a classic BASS harmonica way up front? I've been wanting one for ages but they're freakishly expensive. Love that sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm
Joe McG:

@Rev: I LOVE that sound, too. If you think of one, let me know! Most harmonikeys from this era are more shrill in general because they were easier to record.
  8:18pm
Listener Robert:

Could you imagine the real estate advice guys subbing for Jerry Hickey to give dietary supplement info on WOR?
  8:20pm
Listener Robert:

Could you imagine anyone subbing for anyone else at WBAI, when half of them couldn't stand to be in the same room as the other half?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm
Joe McG:

There have been a lot of crazy fill-ins lately. Therese was just here earlier this evening, Meghan was on for Trouble this morning, and Micah did Dr. Gameshow last night. Not to mention all the weekend shows!

I'm no Gramophone nerd, but these seem like pretty sharp recordings from this time. Were they heavily remastered (or whatever nerdy word applies)? (I'm a nerd).

I love the name at the end too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: Joe's original Surface Noise actually WAS this kind of material, one hour of old timey records, alternating every other week with MAC. The main difference being MAC is an acoustic recording purist, while Joe McG plays mainly early electrical recordings.
