Would "All the Young Dudes" be a proper transition from Bowie tributes to Mott tributes?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm
Scott Williams:

@V Priceless, I'm helpless with Mott - my context would be Ian Hunter's 80s single "All of the Good Ones Are Taken"

@dale, you should check out Evan Davies' show from last week: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm

well, there you go. i will. i know 'the request' is likely a dreaded word in a deejays world. if you watch him on a british talk show it's apparent that he was too young and not prepared.

MADAME GEORGE!!! :D
Avatar 🧩 3:36pm
Matt from Springfield:

One of the all time best albums, complete w/ orig surface noise!

Very ahead for '68 too, a deeply sympathetic song for a cross-dressing Irish drug dealer.
Avatar 3:36pm
steve:

is it just me or is the bassline of madame george similar to dream baby dream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm
efd:

Thanks for the pointer, Scott! @Dale, one of the contributing factors to that talk show appearance going south was the fact that he was supposed to lip sync to "Va Va Va Voom," but they played the backing track for "Space Ace" instead forcing him to make an unexpected adjustment to a song he hadn't been planning to perform.
Avatar 🧩 3:38pm
Matt from Springfield:

@steve: There's only so many notes, and further only so many basslines. Things often sound similar, sometimes deliberately :)
But as you point out, that makes for a good transition between songs w/ similar basslines or rhythm.

The "T.B. Sheets" album has a good early attempt at "Madame George", more of a soul-chorus arrangement than this one.
Avatar 🧩 Swag For Life Member 3:42pm
Ike:

Is this song really about a cross-dressing Irish drug dealer? Because if so, this is the second time in 24 hours I've heard a "classic" musician I hate doing cool subject matter on FMU. Dave Mandl played an (IMO) awful Deep Purple song last night -- but it was a song bashing Mary Whitehouse, who was basically the UK's 60s-70s version of Tipper Gore, but on steroids. I'm so conflicted.

abowie, Scott, abowie
Avatar 🧩 3:46pm
Matt from Springfield:

@Ike: Yep, check the lyrics. And Mary Whitehouse was a vigorous moralist who tried to get everything censored (including "Life of Brian"!) Good for them taking the piss outta her!

But ya know, things CAN be "kinda cool", or "kinda lame", no need to feel conflicted ;)
Avatar 🧩 3:47pm
Matt from Springfield:

I agree Scott, with Van M. it's probably about that, and also "And a whole lot more!" - just like Stevie Nicks writings. They're about something, but never *just* about that, always about "a whole lot more" in addition.
