@Wild Neil: Do you know Rob's TransPacific Paradise - International Music show here 6-9 Eastern Sat.s?: wfmu.org...
If not, ask him for some wailing middle-eastern sounding music (I love it too).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25pm
fred:

@Cecile: I never talked with Boulez, but I noticed he would say hello to everyone, and I saw him chat with people who were cleaning the floors. The current IRCAM director won't even acknowledge your existence unless you're at least middle management. Then again, an acclaimed musician who showed up unprepared to a rehearsal would get thrown out. Politely, I guess, but firmly
This has made for a weird couple of days at work

Gary (bodega pop, drummer stream, wed eve) also plays much middle-eastern wailing.
Avatar 3:29pm
Cecile:

@fred, my dad was like that, too. He had his office in the sub-basement at the school where he taught so he could be in the middle of things in the metallurgy lab, and the mining techs were some of his closest friends. People who are good at what they do, and are secure in themselves don't seem to see all those trappings that other people obsess about.

Avatar 4:04pm

I don't think she needed a lot of pushing. From Wikipedia:
"At 19, Annette married jazz bassist Gary Peacock. At the beginning of the '60s she toured with Albert Ayler, studied Zen macrobiotics with Michio Kushi, and was a close associate of Timothy Leary at the psychedelic center in Millbrook.[1]"

You know what was a good movie? That John Wick movie. Redeemed Keanu in my eyes.
  4:26pm

Pam Grier isn't just the star, the whole movie was conceived and written for her, as a showcase for her particular presence and a tribute to the persona she developed in all those B- movies she starred in in the seventies.

@P-90 - agreed on Jackie Brown. That and Pulp Fiction are my favorite QT films. I enjoyed Hateful Eight.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 4:28pm

Pam Grier was terrific in Jackie Brown, and Robert Forster was really good, too. I remember seeing it in the theater, and then not again until a few years later...on laserdisc. And it was far better than I remembered.

'PulpFiction' made me feel it meant something in a Medium is the Massage sense (@ that time). Ken From Hyde Park:

Thinking of old movies, I have a bunch of VHS tapes with some kid movies and whatnot. Where's a good place to bring them for others' enjoyment or recycling? I don't went to just send them to the landfill.
Avatar 4:32pm
Cecile:

Goodwill will take them. There are people who still look for tapes there. Also, if your public library has a VHS section, they may also appreciate them.
Avatar 4:32pm
Wild Neil:

@Ken-Goodwill might take them.
  4:35pm
P-90:

Last thing about "Jackie Brown": the story is adapted from an Elmore Leonard novel, so it's a more disciplined and fully realized story than Tarantino's originals tend to be.
re: Kill Bill I and II: imo they're also among his best work, there are one or two really effective dramatic elements amongst all the pulpy martial-arts movie stuff, and there are truly first-rate performances by Uma Thurman, David Carradine, and others. Thurman collaborated on the story. Really worth trying if you haven't...
  4:37pm
Sally:

Apropos of the Lemmy reference earlier, I watched some great footage of Lemmy and Philthy Animal on Youtube this weekend and that Phil was so funny and sharp, and he and Lemmy had such great chemistry. I was sad to hear Phil had bad health for a while before he died...

Directors kinda need to be Megalomaniacal to realize their vision - but so often even truly great Directors so woefully simply lack a good Writer...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:37pm

Jackie Brown's also got Michael Keaton playing the same role he plays in "Out of Sight" - also an Elmore Leonard novel.
