Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from January 1, 2016 Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Speaking of Barry Manilow, from Dave Barry's annual year in review:

In Paris, two million people march in a solidarity rally following the horrific terrorist attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Eyebrows are raised when not a single top U.S. official attends, but several days later, Secretary of State John Kerry arrives in France with James Taylor, who — this really happened — performs the song You’ve Got a Friend. This bold action strikes fear into the hearts of terrorists, who realize that Secretary Kerry is fully capable, if necessary, of unleashing Barry Manilow.

Whatever, the theater of the mind here has you near the stage in one single venue that all of these performers are lined up in. Unless it's an outdoor one or one of those multi-room deals where you're carrying your mic from stage to stage.
  2:14pm
Listener Robert:

You know, that'd be fun next year, having a little bleedover with another act in the distance or the next room while you're in this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:15pm

I knew that would happen as the audience sound faded from track to track. It's a bonus.

Second stage bleed...heh.

I think it could easily be done w 2 turntables, the output of one potted down.

Probably in Kensington, Maryland, since I don't think he's playing today.

  2:25pm
Listener Robert:

Especially where one cut starts w crowd noise that wasn't on the other, that's when you'll say you're going from stage to stage.

I was at an indoor multi-stage fest one New Year, and it was surprising how little bleedover there was from one to another, even as loud as they were. Just a little percussion thump occasionally.

When you hear the stories about Live @ Leeds - it's just a school lunch hall. I always imagined it some huge outdoor thing, how it sounded...

One for years to come: the track from Herbie Mann Live at the Whisky-a-Go-Go featuring Sonny Sharrock's monster guitar solo.

That Tom Robinson song got me to looking up things about him; apparently I'd seen his cultural footprint without realizing it. In additional to the iconic song "Glad to Be Gay" (which I hadn't known had been banned by the BBC), references to him appeared (without my having twigged to them) in _Ashes to Ashes_ (the sequel and finale to the excellent _Life on Mars_ TV series):
