greysquad:

actually, a really big influence on Coltrane was John Gilmore, who was Sun Ra's main sax honcho during the sixties and seventies...
this is from wikipedia.
For the next four decades, Gilmore recorded and performed almost exclusively with Sun Ra. This was puzzling to some, who noted Gilmore's talent, and thought he could be a major star like John Coltrane or Sonny Rollins. Despite being five years older than Gilmore, Coltrane was impressed with his playing, and took informal lessons from Gilmore in the late 1950s. Coltrane's epochal, proto–free jazz "Chasin' the Trane" was inspired partly by Gilmore's sound.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25am

greysquad, i have to learn more about Gilmore. i don't doubt what you say, but there's this from Trane: "Yeah, well, I feel indebted to him [Coleman], myself. Because actually, when he came along, I was so far in this thing [the "harmonic structures"], I didn't know where I was going to go next. And, I didn't know if I would have thought about just abandoning the chord system or not. I probably wouldn't have thought of that at all. And he came along doing it, and I heard it, I said, "Well, that - that must be the answer."

Interesting...It's true that ornette played at coltranes funeral, but he was totally into the new free jazz sounds before he died (sun ra, ayler) and was starting to explore that with with "interstellar space", and "ascension"...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39am
coelacanth:

yes! that was Coleman's influence. Ayler got it from Coleman as well. Sun Ra must have been influence too by Coleman, but probably wouldn't admit it!
