Live performance and chat with Ben Mason

Melbourne Singer/songwriter Ben Mason may not be well known in the US, but he's gained fans among Portland's finest musicians including members of Death Cab For Cutie, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists and The Delines, who helped him record his third album, "She'd Need a Heart." Mason describes his latest album as, "Exploring themes of unrequited love, loneliness and gardening,(the album) combines classic 60s orchestral pop, psychedelic ambient folk lullabies, and atmospheric weather jams into a cohesive collection of songs telling the story of a man and his scarecrow." Ben's songs have a sweetness about them, sung with a simple tenor, often punctuated by complementary strings. While here on a short visit, Ben Mason played a few tunes for Irene's show.

Luiz Murá, playing live on WFMU

Live performance and chat with Luiz Murá

A last minute booking brought Brazilian singer/songwriter/guitarist Luiz Murá in to play a few tunes. Coming from a Japanese, Portuguese and Italian family, mixture a large part of Murá's personality and music. In 2012 Luiz collaborated with the Swedish ensemble, Unit, on a world music/jazz fusion collaboration. His most recent album, "En Barcelona," finds Luiz in more of a samba vein from his (now) home base of Barcelona. Luiz Murá played live late in Irene's show.

Greetings melinda! Are we the only ones here? Everyone must be off watching the Mets/Dodgers game.

Maybe that's it. I don't follow baseball, so here I am!

I think the Democratic debates are tonight.

Andrew:

No, you're not the only ones here.

Irene, after your praise for Lisa Fischer's performance at the jazz festival, I looked to see if she was performing locally, and we saw her last Sunday. We had seen her in her role a backup singer with the Stones a few times in the '90's and were impressed. But hunting around for her work didn't deliver much. I concluded she needed a songwriter.

Her performance Sunday was way more than I expected. I've never seen anything like her vocal gymnastics with the two microphones. She drew standing ovations for two of the songs in the middle of the performance as well as the usual one at the end. Nice personality too (kawaii).

I am so sorry I missed Paul McCartney performing tonight. Glad I'm listening to Irene though.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm

Hi Andrew, Cooh John and herb.nyc! Andrew, glad you were able to see Lisa Fisher. I'm hoping she has a great album in the works. herb, I don't think Wondermints supported Arthur Lee.

It just hit me (ouch), it's Baby Lemonade who backed ARthur Lee. ---Chris M / Brian had an Australian band earlier. Is Australia taking over wfmu?

Ah, that's right herb. I was just trying to look it up. Great show at NYC's Town Hall, by the way.

(Kinda related about the old days, but not really. I was taping a record on my stereo, 1980, in college. Our r.a. came into room & started talking, realized what we were doing, and said "sorry, I didn't know you were taping the music". Cute)

Were you referring to Arthur Lee / Zombies Show at town hall, Irene? I saw it, lovely!

In interview in Big Takeover mag yeeears ago, Colin Blunstone flew to USA to do shows. And resolved to go home & quit music (& sell insurance, I think) if the tour didn't work out. But it did. (I hope I'm remembering this right)

UK here, just found this station tonight, I have to say I'm very impressed by your show and I don't say that lightly. Funnily enough I was also watching the baseball whilst listening. Keep up the good work.
  11:33pm
JakeGould:

So sad… Met fever hasn’t really hit NYC that hard… But seeing the handful of Mets fans in some deep Brooklyn neighborhoods “jazzing up” their lawns/cars with a few humble Met items seemed so nice and genuine. Hope everyone deals with it.
  11:34pm
Van in DC:

you found the best of FMU Simon.
  11:36pm
JakeGould:

@SimonSchtick: WFMU is filled with good stuff. And even stuff you will hate. But we all agree on one thing: Dodgers beating the Mets is a sad thing.
  11:36pm
Listener Robert:

I wonder if that memory phenomenon was operating in the case of someone Irwin had a recording of who was mentally deficient somehow but when he got started would belt out orally an uninterrupted string of every song he knew, which could take, like, forever. Like when a mockingbird at night starts one of those hour-long performances of everything they've learned. Irwin called it "Downloading the Repertoir" or something close to that title.
  11:37pm
JakeGould:

@SimonSchtick: Also, you are in the UK and watching American baseball? Kudos!
  11:37pm
JakeGould:

@ListenerRobert: Might be muscle memory since vocalization is a muscle-based task.
  11:38pm
Listener Robert:

Well, sure, in a general sense, but the areas of the brain involved in vocaliz'n are distinct from those involved in other muscle movements, even of some of the same body parts.
  11:39pm
Van in DC:

Sean in UK is by far, and I mean by FAR, the biggest baseball fan I have ever known of. Anywhere.
  11:40pm
SimonSchtick:

Been a baseball nut since 1986 when i hoped the red sox would beat the mets, but times change and I'd rather the Mets won this series. I took in a few games in Dodger Stadium in June, of which they lost all, to the Cardinals. The Dodgers are always beatable, but Greinke will need to be a little off. I'm a Giants fan so i'll certainly be cheering the Mets.
  11:42pm
JakeGould:

@SimonSchtick: The 1986 Mets were amazing. That was my first year in college and I went to the ticker tape parade in NYC. Also, the funniest movement—it’s dark but funny—in the “Bad Lieutenant” to me is when Harvey Keitel’s character hears the Mets wining and shoots out his car radio in front of Port Authority.
  11:44pm
Van in DC:

Thanks Luiz
  11:45pm
SimonSchtick:

Harvey Keitel is currently acting in Home Insurance ads, in his Pulp Fiction character, on UK tv.
  11:47pm
JakeGould:

@SimonSchtick: Hey, money is money…
  11:48pm
SimonSchtick:

Anyway, the Mets are doomed either way. We all know who wins the 2015 World Series according to Biff's almanac.
