Oh yeah, Los Del Rio's "Macarena" was a huge neutron bomb worldwide in '96, but Black Lace actually issued their OWN version of it after it already peaked!! I mean COME ON! ;)

I love "painful" stuff too, which is how I discovered there's so much Euro music that's so awful it never makes the jump to this side of the pond...even with the Internet! On the plus side, I've discovered the terrifying world of "Eurovision" and its related bands!

if you want painful, look for the Canadian cartoon band Prozzak.

99% of the records made by former RuPaul's Drag Race contestants are also certificably awful. Funny sometimes, but mostly awful.

@Cecile: Marty McSorley has played RuPaul herself on occasion--can't imagine "RuPaul wannabes" would be any better!

Ooof, there's a sad category of fame-seekers: "RuPaul WANNABES"! :D

RuPaul has actual charisma and uses a good producer. Not so much other people. Although the drag supergroup DWV does some funny parodies. And Ginger Minj can flat out sing.

@ Cecile and Matt -- 1st time i heard "Macarena" was in the back of one of those HUGE old NYC taxi cabs, i was sharing a ride with two friends and the cab driver was playing a cassette -- "Macarena" came on and we went nuts! bouncing up and down and trying to sing along . . . huge in other parts of the world, had just not hit here . . . YET! cab driver must have gotten a kick out of our enthusiasm . . . but yeah, "Macarena" i can still listen to and enjoy, with Black Lace i wonder . . . what the hell did i just watch!?
and omg, i experienced the Eurovision competition for the first time this year . . . OF COURSE the Hungarian group had quite the "downer" of a song, compared to the other over-the-top GLITZINESS!

Katrina and the Waves 1997, with the song "Love Shine a Light". Surprisingly, with the original members after so many years in obscurity!

"Brotherhood of Man" also won for the UK in '76, but it was always a corporate studio group before (in '70 the group of that name had the hit with "United We Stand", but that's not the same people).

@Cecile: "Save All Your Kisses For Me", the Eurovision one? Amazingly that was a U.S. #1 on A/C!! Yet Abba's "Waterloo", the best and only GOOD Eurovision song wasn't! Whadda world! ("Fernando" did reach #1 on U.S. A/C that year though).

Brotherhood of Man also did a blatant, stupid rip-off of "Fernando" called "Angelo" at the same time!
Avatar 5:49pm
Cecile:

yes. It was a huge hit. And Fernando was #1 for 13 weeks in Oz that year. Still can't listen to that song.
