What was the 1st time you heard the word "bleep" in the censored sound sense? 1st I heard it was on "Green Acres", when the space men bleeped various things, and the blankouts were called and/or spoken as that word.

She was a 10 year that made a record on Stax. She was on Carson. Yeah, Mama, he's... is the one. I don't know. Just found it and I guess because she's so young and I'm listening to Irwin's show it kind of reminded me of Amanda. Probably trying to make too many connections right now.

@SimonStainrod: “You wouldn't get away with that anymore. She was clearly living out some record exec's fantasy.”

You’re kidding me right? Miley Cyrus? Britney Spears? Jessica Simpson? Selena Gomez? We’re talking about kids primed from their early years to be marketable objects.

In comparison, Lena Zavaroni was more genuine because it was just weird…

Jack:

Great Tull, thanks Irwin!

Rachel Sweet. Not quite as young, but definitely marketed for her age.
  3:57pm
JakeGould:

Also, Joan Jett, Cheri Curie and the Runaways. The idea that somehow “that would not happen nowadays” is nuts. It’s actually happening MORE nowadays and nobody flinches than ever before.
  3:58pm
Simon Stainrod:

Irwin. This self-indulgence works a treat. Great selections. My first time lisnin.
  3:59pm
JakeGould:

@Irwin: Listened to some Shooby Taylor this week after Dan Bodah played a track on his show this week. Good job preserving his work. I can’t say I’ll listen to him more than a handful of times, but the guy was so perfectly off-kilter timed in his scat it’s stunning to hear.
  3:59pm
Simon Stainrod:

Lena was 10, singing about older men giving her the eye. I'll repeat, you wouldn't get away with it now. Miley is doing what she's doing as a grown adult.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm
Mike East:

@JakeGould - I was just thinking about this yesterday as I passed a Selena Gomez poster in which she is completely nude. A bit upsetting to me that my daughter and nieces ages 10-12 are her target audience. Seems like they are being primed to have body issues...and I don't know what to do about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm
Mike East:

or maybe I'm just an uptight prude
  4:03pm
JakeGould:

@SimonStainrod: Lena is singing a cute standard song from the 1920s. Her whole album is just classic cover songs. No sexualization if you ask me. Tons of standards like that. Now Britney Spears singing “(Hit Me) Baby One More Time” in a school uniform… There you go… en.wikipedia.org...

  4:06pm
JakeGould:

@MikeEast: Well, I don’t think you are a prude as much as it’s just really crass nowadays. Like Playboy is no longer going to have nudes since it hampers their ability to get traction on social media. Sounds like a genius idea to me in a modern media landscape. Look at old Playboys and there’s some purity to what they did back then.

In contrast what was the ad campaign for the MTV VMAs? Half nude Miley Cyrus’s body literally mutilated in chunks with cutesy hipster/stoner cartoons? What is that?
  4:19pm
Simon Stainrod:

Anyway, there's no such thing as over-sexualization. Thats a misnomer. All we think about 24/7 is sex. And yes, prudism was forced upon us by religious bs.

Heard a lot of Joe Frank on WFMU. Decided to look him up. Found this interesting. After Hours is a great film. @Ken - he performed for FMU at the radio vision festival a few years ago...so I wouldn't say out of the question, though he is getting old, so I would wager he's not that into traveling cross country so much anymore.

@Ike - I've caught a few episodes of that with my daughter. Pretty funny stuff. There is hope out there. I try to steer my daughter towards that kind of stuff - one of the reasons we don't get nickelodeon/MTV.

@Parq - I've been looking forward to the letters section since I read that article last week. Hopefully in the mail today.
