"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot." (Visit homepage.)

John Allen:

hey gang. I would like to put the whole month of october behind us. let's make today the goal. if we can do this together, then all of us win. this is the way abstract motivational speaking starts, right here. this moment. people, we can shape this month to bend, even.

Lose your will to the group will, lose yourself to the group self. Don't be frightened.

that's right George. collectivism is our approach, alienation is our shield. no one really owns this comment board

Damn, missed the Softs! Was that off the self-titled album, or the "Jet Propelled Photographs" demo collection?

Every track on that first Soft Machine album is indelibly etched in my mind. I bought my copy just about 30 years ago, in a long since gone record shop in Woodstock NY.

the Canterbury wood-elf:

Cool, thanks JA!
@George, yeah that first album has endured remarkably well. Three geniuses at work (actually four if you count Hopper's little contribution at the end), at the top of their game after the '68 Hendrix tour.

I'm almost at the end of "Different Every Time", the new Robert Wyatt biography. Highly recommended to anyone who loves pre-'72 Soft Machine.

George of Troy:

@Canterbury w-e: Thanks for the tip on the Wyatt bio! I hadn't heard about it.
In case you haven't seen it, there is a clip on youtube of them on French television ca. 1968, and it is just fantastic.

Hey commenters, did you know you can go back 14 years into the WFMU archives and listen to my show? Or you can rattle thru boxes of tapes of my shows going back another 10 years before that, and it's all because we are immortal. Celebrate with us during our silent fundraiser all month. And make sure you pledge so we can all do this at least another 77 years until Electric Light Orchestra's 1981 concept album "Time" partially takes place (2092). Thanks! -JA
