Zedashe: Captivating Vocal Polyphony from the Republic of Georgia

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Zedashe sings captivating polyphonic choral songs from the country of Georgia - music dating from pre-Christian times that was almost lost during the Soviet era. They'll pull out the bagpipes, drum and more for a dance tune here or there too.

Zedashe's US tour - in support of their superb new album Our Earth and Water - includes tonight’s 8 pm show at Barbes, 376 9th St. at 6th Ave in Park Slope, Brooklyn. But their only Garden State appearance is right here on WFMU!

Same here -- that's a blank space in Firefox but it's fine in Chrome. Anyway, enjoying the show so far! I'm turning it up to drown out the squeaky racket that my bread machine is making. Something needs greasing in there.

  6:47pm Listener Robert:

You need a DJ nicknamed Polyphonic Pod.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm Rob W:

Apparently there does exist a Polyphonic POD Digital composition System... which isn't exactly a DJ, but...

This thing about Georgia being the first Christian nation: Close, but no. Georgia was declared Christian in 337 CE. Its neighbor Armenia became Christian in 301 CE.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Rob W:

Thanks Larry for the correction and clarification there!
  7:33pm Ajnira:

Hey Rob, I love your show! I'm trying to find out the first track you played today. I was driving and I couldn't copy down anything from what you announced. Thanks so much!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Rob W:

Ajnira, Pridjevi was the first one would have been Ubila Sam Cvijet by Prdijevi from Croatia - see pridjevi.bandcamp.com .
Avatar 7:37pm Ĩkє:

On a regular browser, look to the left, first track is at the top. On the WFMU app, press the symbol w/4 horizontal lines, that'll bring up the playlist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm maestroso:

BOAC All Stars are bloody brilliant. I've GOT to see one of their shows.
  7:43pm Ajnira:

No I found what I was listening to, it was, Edip Akbayram: Aldirma Gonul Aldirma and I LOVED it! Can I find that on Bandcamp as well?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm Rob W:

Ajnira: That's a compilation of Turkish singles from the 70s released by the Pharaway Sounds label - you can find info here although I'm not sure about online listening (I'm sure it's out there though): www.discogs.com...
  7:59pm Carmichael:
