Live Performance and chat with Nick Garrie

After recording a Baroque pop masterpiece in the late 60's, "The Nightmare of J.B. Stanislas," Nick Garrie and the album seemingly disappeared when the distribution deal collapsed. But that is far from the end of Nick's story. He continued to write charmingly catchy songs, occasionally collaborating with songwriter Francis Lai, and eventually topped the charts in Spain with a tune in the 1980's. "Stanislas" was finally reissued in 2005, and Garrie tours here and there. Nick Garrie was in NYC for one of those rare shows and Irene brought him into the studio for some live performance and chat.

This is, if not my favorite song of all time, definitely top 5. The first time I heard it I had to stop what I was doing and just sit there and listen.

Hi all. Excuse me as I post this NICK GARRIE thing now (bec later, I'll need to use the iPhone app and that will certainly fail). My pal Jack Rabid does the Big Takeover mag & he alerted us- "watch Nick G's show at Tonic". This be June 2006. But he played Other Music night before tonic & I went. I loved it. After, I told Nick "look at the Big T on the rack, yr record is reviewed". He does so, makes biiig smile, then calls to his friend "hey, looky here, I'm in this magazine!". Next night, I introduce him to jack. this be TEN years ago!

Good tunes comin' you way, Bronwyn, Tome, herb.nyc, and Rev. Rabbit (and everybody tuning in)! Yeah, Bronwyn, every so often "Some Velvet Morning" just gets under my skin and I gotta play it. Herb, So glad you told us your Nick Garrie story. He was brilliant a few weeks ago at the tiny club I saw him at, even though the sound was terrible and some patrons didn't give a damn who was up there. Glad to send this set your way tonight!

Hi Irene, hi everyone. Got stuck in DC traffic
Avatar 9:25pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Linda: I wrote a play/musical thing about a bar that turns out to be purgatory and all the characters tell the stories of their lives so that the bartender can judge whether they deserve to go to heaven or hell. The show features Brel's songs, which are used as the way the characters tell their stories. It's happening in December at my school (Ithaca College).

Avatar 9:33pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

@Linda: You mean the cast? Yeah, they like the songs, although they're finding them difficult to sing. They like that they're not your typical songs you sing in a musical. They're smarter, funnier, and more dramatic, and it's a great opportunity for them to step out of their comfort zone.
  9:34pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Listening to an episode of the Beatles-themed podcast 'Fab 4 Free 4 All' about Lennon's best vocals - & they were musing on the influence his pal Nilsson might have had on his singing. Makes sense!...

What got me deeply when seeing Daughter live... in their videos, Elena, the lead singer, never ever smiles or makes eye contact with the camera. Live? holy cow. She is so so so sweet. Massive smiles and eye contact. So shy!

@Irene - I was referring to the first Nick Garrie track you played which was clearly an album cut...I was confused cuz it was under the "live performance" heading, yet I heard strings among other instruments that I wouldn't have expected in an in studio performance. Then it faded out, and I figured it out. I'm easily confused. What a great track that is, though! Thanks for leading with it.
