This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

So, just about 15 minutes ago, I heard a pigeon on my A/C window unit, and before I could shoo it away, there was a a hug thud, and a nearly one meter falcon had snared the pigeon and proceeded to tear it apart on my window unit. It then flew across the street to the roofs (when it noticed my wife and I filming it), and ate its prize. It left a mess of blood and feathers on our A/C, which will be fun to wash.

@ngh wow, nature!

I wanted something that conveyed an idealistic rejection of the reality of the natural world, as well as the torrid climes of tropical summer: FITZCARRALDO had to be the one
Avatar 7:21pm
Flash Strap:

Wow NGH. I love watching a hawk eat his prey
Avatar 7:22pm
northguineahills:

Yeah, since it was in my window, it was even closer then when one sees one in a nature doc.
Avatar 7:24pm
Flash Strap:

I once watched a hawk take a rat apart in the Boston public gardens. I was amazed at the surgical aspect of his consumption, almost one part of the body at a time. When he pierced the gall bladder, an arc of bile sprayed into the air and caught the sun. He then removed the spine, whole, and horked it down in one piece. So weird
Avatar 7:28pm
Flash Strap:

I hope you guys don't mind if i just devote this whole set to Jorge Ben, because I am goin' CRAZY listening to him

Avatar 7:36pm
northguineahills:

I did a primer of Jorge Ben for a non-music subreddit not too long ago. I'd share it, but b/c of other commitments, I had to do it at the last second, and it's by far, not one of my better writing moments.

Hi Hi Doug! Are you helping me with my pronunciation? Portuguese is a mystery of esoteric blends to me
  7:37pm

Hahah I'm not that into Tropicália that much, other DJs might help you more, but thanks for the proposal. I can help you with pronunciation, though
Avatar 7:39pm

I thought I remembered seeing you school someone about tropicalia, or maybe Chico Buarque, on the boards... my mistake!

@Flash Strap: I was "dropping science" on the subject once, according to Jeff G, on a D:O show about it, but I discover lots of Brazilian music through WFMU actually
Avatar 7:50pm

I wish I had more science to drop on the subject, time to do some reading up
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50pm
listener james from westwood:

Late getting to the nature stories, but: Holy crap, ngh! They do strike like lightning and eat when the gettin's good, I guess! My parents saw a falcon or hawk casually shred a bluejay out on their deck once. As for the A/C, as Han Solo said, "Sorry for the mess."

Bee Gees' early stuff is a constant revelation to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm
listener james from westwood:

(Also a big fan of their dance tracks.)
Avatar 8:06pm
Flash Strap:

I agree about the early stuff. It's a total obsession I have. Was thinking of doing a show about it, naturally. This is definitely one of the weirder ones of the whole period
Avatar 8:09pm
Flash Strap:

Dance tracks are good too of course, despite certain ones having been played well beyond "to death", but the early stuff is so mellotron/cello heavy and totally fixated on historical lyrics... brilliant, utterly unique stuff. Robin Gibb is one of the weirdest singers in pop, and together they have the strangest harmonies
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
listener james from westwood:

That would be fabulous, Evan, and I suspect you'd get heavy interest among your fellow FMU DJs. Trouble for one is a fine friend of that era of theirs.
Avatar 8:10pm
Flash Strap:

god i love the Bee Gees
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
listener james from westwood:

And hells yes to "Tuareg."
Avatar 8:11pm

that bee gees song i had never heard before. i went to clicky star the song and i was all "this is the frikking bee gees?!?!?"
Avatar 8:12pm
Flash Strap:

I know! I mean, they are a really surprisingly unusual sounding group, but even for them that song is a shocker
Avatar 8:15pm
Flash Strap:

love the way this track's vocals are recorded
Avatar 8:16pm
Flash Strap:

thanks for the support on that one, James, I'm gonna do it for sure now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm

I love bee gees too but missed that last track, dammit. A bee gees show would be wonderful.

I promise when I do it, I'll play that song again. How could i not?

Avatar 8:19pm

Hey RRN63! yeah, Gal is totally feral on this one. It's awe-inspiring
Avatar 8:21pm
Flash Strap:

I mean, I feel like if you played that stuff to Grace Slick she'd just catch on fire. Leave nothing behind but a little ash-colored bird who'd sing an apology for not being revolutionary enough
Avatar 8:38pm
Mayuko:

Got home! Wish I did earlier! Hello Evan and everyone.
Avatar 8:50pm
Flash Strap:

Hello Mayuko! Happy to have you late or whenever!
Avatar 8:52pm
hyde:

i have always loved the early free jazz gato stuff, but i seem to have missed a lot of the early 70's work mainly because the later fusion stuff is so terrible. i think i need to try out some of this stuff. (so thanks for the link at Flash Strap for Under Fire which is still live! flashstrap.blogspot.com...)
Avatar 8:54pm
northguineahills:

Wow, Gato w/ Lonnie Smith, somehow missed this one.
Avatar 8:54pm
Flash Strap:

Later Gato stuff is pretty rough, and the early free stuff is really good, but for my money the best of the best is the early 70's. he was just in a state of grace for that whole period
Avatar 8:55pm
Flash Strap:

he also played on a lot of Piero Umiliani's late 60's jazz recordings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm
melinda:

That was beautiful.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm

Hi Flash & Explorers.
...i wouldn't say hi now but for the hope that your timeframe is as it usually is!
Avatar 8:59pm
Flash Strap:

I'll tip a bit over, C. As usual! Glad you're with us!
Avatar 9:00pm
hyde:

@Flash wow! I didn't know about the early Lalo Schifrin thing either. I somehow always thought he sort of went right from free jazz into the bad cheese I generally associate him with, but I clearly was sorely mistaken.
Avatar 9:02pm
Flash Strap:

I envy you the 1st-time listens you are now able to have, Hyde! Definitely check out Bolivia, Chapter 1, and Last Tango if you've never really heard that one (it's really good)
Avatar 9:04pm
Flash Strap:

Under Fire, Chapter 2 (and 3&4, but to a lesser extent), Fenix, and Two Pictures Years (1965-1968- Music by Piero Umiliani) are also really great.

I'm obsessed with this particular track, and Eddie Harris in general. This one just escalates into infinite intensities
Avatar 9:15pm
hyde:

ah, it's a Donald "Duck" Dunn bass line. That explains it.
Avatar 9:16pm
Flash Strap:

oh shit, is it really?
Avatar 9:17pm
Flash Strap:

it is. That DOES explain it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
coelacanth:

hmm. i have no basslines at the moment. i'm listening via laptop with no headphones.
Avatar 9:17pm

yeah, looks like he was the bassist for all of Come on Down!

Flash Strap,
Trying to work on my own show while lending an ear toward your show is impossible. I just want to chain you to your mixing console and force you to keep at it for another 15 hours. Good thing for you the Pope is on our soil or I might've seriously considered it.
