@ Ben, that sounds worse than actually drinking out of a dip spit bottle. I should know because my roommate was spitting into a soda can, which I thought was mine and I took a sip.

I recently found out that Fanta was created when the German licensor for Coca Cola in the 1940s could not import ingredients because of the whole Nazi trade embargo so Fanta (orange flavor) was formulated based on the ingredients readily available to Nazis.

It’s all explained in this 75th anniversary commercial that glosses a bit over Nazis. www.youtube.com...

A couple yrs. back Reason TV did a feature on a biz in L.A. (IIRC) that was a distributor & retailer of uncommon (as well as common) sodas. Vast panoply of flavors. I should dig that up & get the info to Our Hosts.

I used to visit Pittsburgh regularly (family), and suddenly about 1970 they started advertising "red pop" on TV. I don't know if that's when the name came into that entire region.

@KatInChicago: When I made them at a soda fountain in the 1980s, the basic formula was like a 1/2 seltzer, 1/2 lemon/lime soda like 7-Up/Sprite and then a squeeze of cherry syrup. Sometimes a maraschino cherry dropped into it.

@KatInChicago: You’re welcome! Also when I mention using 7-Up/Sprite, remember this… Anyone telling you these fountain sodas didn’t use brand name flavors is lying. In the 1970s/1980s I know that’s how the stuff was mixed because those were the flavors that were available.

"Red pop" is not a trademark of Faygo's, though. It's been used by others generically.

Listener Kat doesn't pay much attention to the Cubs except to check the home game schedule to know when to avoid Wrigleyville. Missed the evacuation story. Don't know if they are still peeing in cups! Also, since you mentioned it, my show is on wluw.org 10-midnight Central. Not consistently archived at this time although I record most of them.

Passhole.

Which makes you wonder how any play-by-play got done the yr. before when it was ONLY Cosell & Meredith. I used to watch, don't ask.
  6:53pm

The first year, Keith Jackson did the PBP. Obviously a pro's pro, but he did not fit in to the Roone Arledge notion of combining sports with entertainment.

  6:57pm

Now that chalmers & Ralphine mention it, yes, Keith Jackson did the play by play, wasn't in the same booth during the show, and often sounded like a spotter in the background. They really de-emphasized him.

I think Arledge knew he wanted Gifford, but used Jackson as a placeholder because he had one year remaining on his CBS contract.
  6:58pm
Listener Robert:

Then Keith Jackson kept announcing sports for yrs. & slowly went downhill. Amazingly, near Jackson's retirement, he became, as my friend Charlie said, less senile.
  7:00pm
chalmers:

Jackson semi-retired a few times. I think he actually did get better at the end because he wasn't the #1 guy anymore and did fewer games, exclusively near his west coast home.
