Live Performance by Matt Keating with Steve Mayone

Eleven albums in Matt Keating still has such an easy feel for words and melodies that roll off the tongue. On Matt's latest, "This Perfect Crime," there's no shortage of the great story-songs laiden with catchy hooks and dark, meaningful lyrics that he's known for. Matt Keating returned to Irene's show with guitarist Steve Mayone for a live set.

What do you plan on playing for the extra second tonight, Irene? Do you have to split it with William?

I'm planning a really fantastic blink. One for the ages...

The leap second was added at 0 hr. UTC, so it's there already.

It was split between Chris T. & Gaylord Fields.

I used to count off the secs. of that last minute on WWV when they added a leap sec. Some yrs. I didn't know whether they were doing it or not & had to count to find out. Usually New Year.

The Brits have bad food and bad coffee. How do they live? I mean they got decent chocolate, right? And tea, right? And Indian food but that doesn’t count, right?
  10:40pm
JakeGould:

And Dr. Who. Tom Baker era that is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41pm
Irene Trudel:

Yeah, Jake, I'll have to check in with Sean in the UK. He can update us tomorrow morning when he wakes up (it's 5 hours later for him now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm
Irene Trudel:

Well, Doctor Who counts for a lot!
  10:45pm
JakeGould:

@Irene: You know what’s odd about Dr. Who? Is now I have to qualify I only care about the Tom Baker series stuff and not anything else. There was this brief period from the 1980s to the 1990s where you just said “Dr. Who” and everyone automatically knew you meant Tom Baker. Feh! Millennials!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Irene Trudel:

Ah, that's too bad Jake! I was a HUGE fan of Tom Baker-era Doctor Who. But I really loved David Tennant in the role. I think he's a close second, in terms of the "nutter" factor. And the latest guy, Peter Capaldi, is pretty good too. What can I say, I'm a big "Whovian."
  11:20pm
JakeGould:

@Irene: Respect all of that. I have weirdly specific eras for a lot of things I like, so that’s me more than anything.
  11:21pm
JakeGould:

And thank you for the “Yes” in light of Chris Squire’s passing.

I agree, I Irene (about Dr. Who). Thanks, and have a great night!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm

Point taken, Jake. You picked a perfectly fine era of the show to put on a pedestal.

Thanks for the Yes Irene. The new '72 live release is quite good, listened to that today. These 2 tunes highlights of course.

Hello, Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm
Irene Trudel:

Thanks Holasoymilk and Santos! Love the Yes, although some of it it really doesn't hold up well for me. Hi KP!
  11:35pm
P-90:

Hi all. I'm really crushed by Squire's passing. I'm that much of a fan of this band, I have a big, long history with them, and with Mr. Squire's music. The only bass guitar I own is just like his, because it had to be exactly that way. That kind of a fan.
  11:38pm
JakeGould:

Well, I think of “Yes” the same way I described “Dr. Who”… Some of the classic stuff I love, but not the whole catalogue. And another thing… your brownstone creature pic is just so fascinatingly beautiful. Good eye, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39pm
Irene Trudel:

P-90, Squire had such a distinctive sound, and he was a really interesting player. That's one of the things I found so powerful about Close to the Edge.
  11:42pm
JakeGould:

And here is Tom Baker and “Time Lady” Romana in some cool commercials for mini computers. www.youtube.com...

Irene, just wanted to say that I'm loving this Yes set! Been awhile since I've heard so much good Yes work..
  11:44pm
KP:

Even the snobbiest new wavers and punk rockers were saddened by this guy's passing. He was a class act in a field that has few.
  11:47pm
JakeGould:

@KP: Yeah. The punk “Yes” backlash is annoying because their first few LPs are just really great.
  11:48pm
Carmichael:

Hi Irene. Way behind on my listening chores. And your significant other, I am to understand, wrote a brilliant Squire eulogy in the NYT. Truly nice.
  11:50pm
Yes:

Yes yes yes yes yes, oh Yes!
  11:50pm
KP:

They did a Byrds song on their first album! Honor thy Byrds.
  11:50pm
P-90:

@Irene: perhaps the simplest, most encompassing thing one can say about Squire's bass playing on arrangements like Close to the Edge is that his bass is like a section of an orchestra, like the horns or winds, that meshes with what the other instruments are doing as an integral part of the piece in that way, rather just working with the drums as a "rhythm section" in the more common way. His parts are also famously melodic in the way McCartney's and Entwhistle's are, but his are the most sublimely contrapuntal, if that makes sense.
  11:51pm
Carmichael:

@alan: I am also in Sacramento!
  11:58pm
JakeGould:

@P-90: Agree. But the thing I have found with most prog bands like Yes is that their first few releases are so amazing because—let’s face it—pretension of a lot of their concepts have been so well honed that the product is acceptable. By a prog band’s 3rd or 4th release, they don’t have enough time to refine their craft into art so it all becomes mindless noodling.
  11:59pm
KP:

Bye bye, Irene

P-90, perfectly put. Good Night, All!

Hi Irene, thanks for the mention, I guess our forte is tea but there are the usual chains for a decent cup of coffee, Costa, Starbucks, my favourite is Krispy Kreme, the coffee there is fab. Great set from Matt Keating and a fine tribute to Chris Squire.
