Singer, songwriter and folklorist Irka Mateo began her career performing Brazilian music before returning to her roots in the Dominican Republic. She immersed herself in Dominican folk music, popular religion and indigenous Taino culture. and incorporated what she learned into her debut solo album Anacaona.

Now she's branching out again with new globally-inspired songs that she'll perform at a big show Tuesday July 14th at Joe's Pub. We'll learn about about Irka Mateo's music and her musical explorations tonight on WFMU.
