First heard Ornette at about age 10. The local library (out in suburbia) had a copy of NEW YORK IS NOW! and the sleeve just seemed PACKED with ALL-CAPS ENERGY, with exclamation marks! ... It blew my freaking face off.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm

I only saw Ornette once, five or six years ago. The show was great, but what struck me the most was how he remained on stage to sign stuff and chat until the venue's staff got *really* insistent that he leave. I've rarely seen such joy in a musician during and after the show

hard for me to equate form, line and color to musical notes, but i suppose it can be done,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm
coelacanth:

jazz was originally the music of deviants and people outside of respectable society. "jazz" literally meant "noise". "free jazz" or "out jazz" is actually the only kind of jazz that truly lives up to the name "jazz".
( and conveniently,for my point's sake,is the only jazz i really love!)
Avatar 3:44pm
Cecile:

but it's still pretty respectable now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:45pm
coelacanth:

...as much as i Love and immeasurably respect Ornette Coleman, his music is usually not as cacophonous as i'd like.
Avatar 3:46pm
Cecile:

still, you gotta have a break from Peter Brotzmann from time to time, right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm

Cecile i thought to say that because of the reference to fine wine, and how funny it is that jazz is considered respectable; refined; even "high-brow" now!

I always thought jazz came from the nineteen noughts slang of jass, which meant a fart, both in smell and noise.
Avatar 3:51pm
Claw!:

Hah! Well, then we have *that* in common. :-) You said 'cacophony,' so Ayler came to mind right away.
Avatar 3:52pm
Chris from DC:

I started to appreciate less cacophony when I got into Sonny Simmons I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Music is often described in visual terms: 'dark', 'bright'...I can't help but compare what happened w/ Music in the Modern era w/ what happened in Painting & such - it seems natural & reflexive to do so to me. It seems to me the same sort of argument from people that they can't 'relate' or 'understand' Free Jazz as saying Picasso shouldn't have two eyes on the same side of someone's face & there's no Art to it.
- Jazz is the American Classical Music - & I can understand that - esp. for some African Americans - you're supposed to dress in suits for it & everything...The term 'Free Jazz' often implied not just Freeing the Forms - but the Contexts like that too - often very Political & such - like everything else into the 1960s...Gotta imagine how this Ornette hit people in the late 1950s.
I think the words & terms 'Jazz' & 'Rock'n'Roll' can & did mean a lot of things - but primarily Sex.
  3:52pm
cheri:

thank you Fabio for the wonderful tributes!
Avatar 3:54pm

I like an awful lot of cacophonous stuff. I do like the beat to be a little less abstract, but there are some free improvisors in both percussion and reeds I really like.

jazz did mean sex. i remember scatman carruthers on mike douglas - mike asked about him playing jazz clubs early in his career and scatman said 'no, no, no - i won't use that word. that means dirty things...'

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63 OMG
  4:35pm
Listener Robert:

It's been assumed by many (me for a while) that "jazz" originally meant "fuck", so jazz music was called that because it was imagined to be the music of fucking, or music to fuck by. But I understand those who've researched it better have mostly concluded that the music had that name 1st, then it became a euphemism for sexual intercourse.
Avatar 4:35pm
johnforz:

ha, that album is so good (and one of my favorite front/back covers)... also Body Meta. Of Human Feelings is another really weird one that's kinda great. You can trace those records directly to a lot of English Post-Punk of the time.. he was so influential
Avatar 4:38pm

It is said that jazz started in the bordellos of New Orleans.

Mine too, johnforz. I think Ornette never made a terrible record, and he never sold out to pop. that's something.

not that I don't like some pop-jazz, but Ornette wasn't pop, and I don't think he had a pop mentality.

OED speculates that "jazz" might have been a variant of "jasm," which means "energy, spirit, 'pep,'" and that "jasm" is apparently a variant of "jism," which means the same. A second meaning of "jism," also recorded in OED: semen, sperm.
