Las Alegres Ambulancias - Afro-Colombian Palenque Legends

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Las Alegres Ambulancias come from San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia, a remote village with a rich African heritage - it was the first town formed by freed slaves in the Americas. The ensemble originated as a drum-and-vocal group way back in 1905, and their mission is to carry on centuries-old Afro-Colombian traditions. But these are living traditions - so nowadays the band spices things up with electric guitar and more. Tonight we'll hear a sizzling live session by these coastal Colombian cultural icons - recorded live at WFMU during their 2014 US tour.

Big thanks to Javier Mutis of Om Producciones, Colombia; Kaisha Johnson of CTMD, and our illustrious engineer Dan Barker.

TICKET GIVEAWAYS TONIGHT!

We have two more pairs of tickets available to see Red Baraat, the dynamic Indian-inspired brass band led by superb percussionist Sunny Jain on the final date of their month-long Friday residency at Subrosa, 63 Gansevoort St. in lower Manhattan, Friday May 29 at 8 pm. Red Baraat is celebrating the release of its latest cd, Gaadi of Truth.

We also have two pair of tickets for a show this Tuesday night May 26th at 9:30 - to see another band making a stand - Jon Madof’s Zion80, who are playing Tuesday nights at Joe’s Pub, 425 Lafayette Street the next three weeks. If a 13-piece all-star band that blends Jewish melodies and downtown improv with Fela-inspired Afrobeat isn’t enough, this Tuesday night’s show features a special guest, Brazilian-born super-percussionist Cyro Baptista.

To enter the drawing for a pair of tickets, email me, Rob W, here and please put "TIX" in the subject line. Indicate which concert you're interested in - or if both, indicate first and second choice. The deadline to enter is Sunday, May 24 at midnight.

Anyone may enter but I will draw first among entrants who have not won tickets in the past 8 weeks (not counting our Brooklyn Botanic Garden Cherry Blossom Festival giveaway), and then I'll draw again from all entrants if tickets are still left.

Winners will be notified by noon (NYC time), Monday, May 25th, 2015.

Wow, that's amazing Bas! Bassekou and Ngoni Ba are coming over here this summer - though I can't really help repair their instruments. (They're playing a free show at BAM Metrotech Thursday afternoon July 9...

Fascinating interview Rob & Las Alegres Ambulamcias! I'm wondering if the "ambulance" explained in the interview is what we refer to as a "hearse"? Well, whatever very interesting nonetheless. I'm wondering if you're ever going to play ndigenous Samii music from Norway- it's something most people don't know about.
