Hello!

Sem Chumbo:

Good morning, Jeffrey. Hello, wide-awake-for- hours JakeGould, owner and lead contributor to Wacky Ideas Magazine.
Is it time to plant parsnips? Zone 5b.
  6:16am
JakeGould:

@Sem: Well, to be fair I fell asleep at 9:30pm-ish, and then woke up at 2:30am-ish. Which is all the side effect of me forcing myself to get back to sleep at around 11:00pm-ish and waking up at 6:00am-ish. Meaning, I will be signing off to complete my sleep duties soon enough. And yes, parsnips.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19am
Sem Chumbo:

A wise person are you, JakeGould.
So, I can put you down for a cubit of hand-raised, nun-selected rainbow and unicorn designer parsnips, then?
  6:20am
Cooh John:

Good morning JD, JG, SC, and initials to come. Wish I could help with your agricultural query, Sem.

Brian in UK:

Bill Fay is like the flood gates released these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25am
Brian in UK:

....or maybe that volcano in Chile that just took off and surprised everyone. Having been dormant for years. Better analogy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27am
Sem Chumbo:

Me, too, Cooh John. Planting in a short season place such as this is anxiety-making, for sure.
  6:27am
JakeGould:

@Sem: I thought you ran a CSA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29am
Brian in UK:

@Sem ah the sweetness and aroma of a fresh parsnip. Wish I could magic our rotavator over your way to help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:29am
Sem Chumbo:

Can't swing a dead cattail round here without hitting a CSA farmer. I specalize in the aforementioned parsnips, seaweed-grown taters and garlic. Lots and lots of garlic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30am
Brian in UK:

sem what is CSA?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32am
Sem Chumbo:

@BiUK:speaking of noses: www.pigerhenricus.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:33am
Sem Chumbo:

@BiUK: Community supported agriculture. Pay money up fromt in the spring, and get weekly baskets of in-season produce from a local producer. Getting more popular every year round here.
  6:34am
Cooh John:

Every farmer I've talked to is anxiety-ridden. When every year you bet the farm on the seed planted in the ground....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36am
Brian in UK:

Sem, love it. There are so many gins on the market these days. Even Gin Festivals over here.

We have something similar to CSA but it is not community based just straight business
  6:38am
Cooh John:

@ Sem; when is your last yearly frost date. May 15 here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:39am
Brian in UK:

Sem Talking of seaweed, ever eaten Laver bread? Delish, as Bertie W might say.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42am
Sem Chumbo:

@Cooh John. I live on tidal salt water, at sea level, so it's USUALLY the first week in April. But this has been an unusual weather year here, hence: anxiety.
  6:44am
Mark:

I just learned about laverbread. Fantastic stuff. It can even cure EXPOSURE TO RADIOACTIVITY! In New Jersey, it went down in the 30s last night and they issued a freeze warning. Farmers/gardeners beware.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45am
Sem Chumbo:

@biUK: I had not until this moment. Bookmarked, with thanks. Tourists around here at breakfast are subjected to dulse, a dried red seaweed with your lifetime iodine needs in every bite. It truly is delicious, but an acquired taste. Start now by sipping from the iodine bottle and eventually you'll build up your tastebuds.

Brian in UK:

The lady came from Balitmore, said her name was Susan Moore. This was in my head last week.

Swansea Market is the place to get it. Bit out of the way. Round the corner is the Gower penisular where the sheep graze on the salt marshes. Delish again.
  7:14am
Cooh John:

Jeffrey, nice show. A continuance of last night when I saw John Prine and Leo Kottke.
  7:36am
P-90:

@Chem Sumbo: They do have dulse in the UK, it's served in restaurants and inns (yes, often at breakfast) in Scotland and Ireland, though the English seem to have abolished it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42am
Sem Chumbo:

@P-90: I suppose the latter is because fried dulse would be too repugnant even for a typical English breakfast fry-up. Difficult to imagine:-D.
No Bushwick dulse dealers, then? Not obscure enough?
Avatar 7:53am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- beautiful & excellent as ever DJ JD.
  7:54am
P-90:

I don't think there are local sources for dulse. Maybe you can send some down, maybe get it to "trend" as "niche produce."
Avatar 7:55am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...kale chips are trendy just now of course...
  7:55am
P-90:

"Bushwick Dulse Dealers" sounds like a band that plays Irish pubs.
  7:56am
P-90:

@RR: Kale chips are EVERYwhere in New York.
  7:59am
P-90:

@Sem: There you go, maybe Rabbit's got the right idea: find a way to turn dulse into "chips" and you're on your way. You can do flavors: salsa, cheddar, curry, cinnamon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00am

Jeffrey, Are the Chapin Sisters related to Harry?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am
Jeffrey Davison:

Yes, Brian...daughters of Tom, nieces of Harry.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06am
Sem Chumbo:

Leave it to SHRUNKEN PLANET listeners to solve problems of great import. My thx, RRN63 and the redoubtable P-90.
All this deep thinking likely impossible without this morning's stellar soundtrack@Jeffrey.

Thanks for the Joni. Just found out yesterday about her being in an unresponsive coma, with not a lot of hope of getting out of it. Wow.

Well...saw a conflicting story that apparently Joni is actually fine. Huh.
