Today's topic -- Stan Freberg: Threat or menace?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

Threatening menace? Menacing threat? All good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Ken From Hyde Park: That is the correct answer.
Avatar 5:14pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...this program *never* makes me ask 'So What?'...
  5:15pm
Tommy:

That's what I'm talking about
Avatar 5:15pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...or any other thremacing premise...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Perhaps "So who?" or "So how?"
Avatar 5:16pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...oh yeah those...
Avatar 5:17pm
fleep:

Freberg got paid to make ads that lampooned advertising itself. He was subversive in many directions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:19pm
Gaylord Fields:

@fleep: The phrase "biting the hand that feeds him" should be retired in his honor.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:20pm
Gaylord Fields:

Freberg made his disdain for the tricks of advertising abundantly clear in his comedy, and then he somehow got clients to pay him to expose these tricks in service of their products.

doca:

Hi, Gaylord, I'm digging today's jazzy vibes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Hugh:

Lou is cool enough as it is but he sometimes hangs at my local jazz spot, Smoke. Hi Gaylord!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22pm
Gaylord Fields:

@doca: Thanks, brother! I'm in a jazzy mood today, it seems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Hugh: Good to hear from you! Thanks for the Lou D. update.
Avatar 5:25pm
doca:

Gaylord Fields Quintet, "In a Jazzy Mood" (Columbia Records, 1958), Which instrument do you play, Gaylord?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
Gaylord Fields:

@doca: To quote John Lennon, I play the fool.
  5:28pm
P-90:

Nice set, DJ Gaylord. And greetings tio all the Gaylordians and Frebergomeisters in attendance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29pm
Gaylord Fields:

@P-90: Thanks for the felicitous salutations!
Avatar 5:30pm
doca:

@Gaylord: That's the easiest thing to play
  5:33pm
P-90:

Some of these losses just hurt more than others somehow, and I'm still reeling from the news about Freberg. I guess one develops extra-strong feelings of connection to particular cultural figures.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Gaylord Fields:

@P-90: This one is affecting me more than I would have expected. I've been a fan since childhood, and he subverted my worldview as much as Mad magazine, etc.
Avatar 5:40pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...was just watching some of Lennon's Foolishness other day: www.youtube.com... ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
Gaylord Fields:

Let's show some love for Jess Roden, a criminally unheralded vocalist.
  5:53pm
sugarwolf:

Hello hello no time to comment today.... I actually had work!!!
  5:53pm
sugarwolf:

I earned enough to pay for my record fair purchases :)
Avatar 5:56pm
Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Gorkys track reminded me a bit of Neutral Milk Hotel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm
Gaylord Fields:

Hello and goodbye, @sugarwolf!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:56pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Kenzo: Oh, I totally hear that.
  6:03pm
V Priceless:

Hey Gaylord! Fab show, as usual! Thanks!
  6:07pm
P-90:

Paul Frees: Boris Badunov, Pop 'n' Fresh, and at his lowest point, "John" and "Paul" on the US cartoon "The Beatles" show...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Gaylord Fields:

Thanks, @V Priceless!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
Gaylord Fields:

@P-90: Actually, John and George. Paul & Ringo were by Lance Percival, who did a somewhat better job, which is damning with faint praise.
  6:10pm
P-90:

Ha ha, thanks! A second after I posted I thought: wait, was it Paul or George?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
Gaylord Fields:

On the other hand, Percival (who died just a few months ago) acquitted himself nicely as "Old Fred" in Yellow Submarine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
Gaylord Fields:

That was odd.. I left Olatunji going live. Sorry,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Gaylord Fields:

So I say why not just start the song over?
  6:14pm
JakeGould:

Hello!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm

Hello, @JakeGould!
Avatar 6:16pm

- for 'Keeping Up Appearances' fans:'Onslo' was Paul's voice in YellowSub...which I can't quite (Sub word) fathom...
  6:17pm
JakeGould:

Stan Freverg? Freberg I say.
  6:20pm
P-90:

"Stan Freverg"- the "Danish Stan Freberg"?
Avatar 6:20pm
glenn:

hello, fields trippers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm
Gaylord Fields:

@Revolution Rabbit Nov63: Which is why his Paul voice is better than Lance Percival's, as Geoffrey Hughes was a genuine working-class Liverpudlian, like McCartney.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm
Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: I like that appellation!
Avatar 6:28pm
glenn:

this vashti must be newish, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28pm
Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: Yes, it came out just a few months ago.
Avatar 6:29pm
glenn:

i was always disappointed that school field trips never went to, you know, fields.
Avatar 6:30pm
glenn:

although i do recall going on one to a swamp.
  6:40pm
JakeGould:

@glenn: One field trip I had in elementary school was to the boiler room. We all got to see how the boiler room worked and what the janitor did all day.
Avatar 6:42pm
glenn:

i know our janitor was adept at cleaning up vomit.
  6:44pm
sugarwolf:

Oh Françoise I still love you even though you seem to have turned into a crank with unfortunate views ...
  6:44pm
JakeGould:

He also liked to sit around a desk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:45pm
Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: She should stop hanging out with Brigitte Bardot.
  6:45pm
sugarwolf:

I went on a field trip in HS to the met museum and we saw Harrison Ford looking at the Monets.
  6:46pm
P-90:

Did Harrison seem to approve?
  6:46pm
sugarwolf:

And sylvie vartan....
Avatar 6:47pm
dk:

ok, SO this nightjar orchestra song reminds me of 'life in a northern town.' THAT DOESN'T MAKE ME A BAD PERSON, ALL RIGHT?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:47pm
Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Is Sylvie also a Le Pen supporter?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
Gaylord Fields:

@dk: How does liking a popular song make you bad? I'm only being slightly naive in asking.
Avatar 6:49pm
glenn:

which one? the daughter actually seems reasonable compared to her old man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Gaylord Fields:

@glenn: Kinda like Alessandra Mussolini vis-à-vis Gramps?
  6:51pm
SeanG:

Hey Na Na Na
Avatar 6:51pm
dk:

it totally doesn't -- but overexposed pop songs are so widely criticized that it's easy for them to become guilty pleasures in spite of their redeeming qualities (and i think 'life in a northern town' has a lot of those.)
Avatar 6:53pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Flamin' Groovies!
...love this album...drink a bit, & I might ruthlessly murder the whole unfortunate thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:53pm
Gaylord Fields:

@dk: I read you, but I try to operate under the assumption that one person's overexposed is another's unheard. But then, I have the luxury of contextualization within a set of music to make my case.
Avatar 6:54pm
glenn:

at least they admit they're fascists, unlike most right wing types.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Ken From Hyde Park:

The Groovie Ghoulies will have to wait for another show.
  6:57pm
mr c:

Francoise Hardy, Vashti Bunyan, Betty Carter, Orchestra Harlow...all good with Gaylord on Sunday..
Avatar 6:59pm
dk:

i actually envy the person for whomhearing 'life in a northern town' is a fresh experience.
  6:59pm
P-90:

Thanks, DJ Gaylord, Stan Freberg, Flamin' Groovies, Groovy Ghoulies, and of course, "Gramps" Mussolini!
Avatar 7:01pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...hard not to relate to 'northern towns' up here...
- Thx GF !!
