Thanks everyone for your incredible support during our successful fundraising Marathon!

First - Niger's superstar juggernaut Tal National returns to our airwaves with a studio session and interview. We catch them in the early stages of an extended tour of North America. The band is on the road to support their most rhythmically adventurous recording yet, the scintillating Zoy Zoy (FatCat Records). We'll hear Tal National’s show-stopping super-charged adaptation of a Hausa spirit possession ritual plus lots of earth-shaking originals.

In the last half of the show, a very different adaptation of ritual music: Guitarist Yoshie Fruchter, who established himself as one of New York's leading Judeo-mashers with his instrumental band Pitom, introduces us to his new project, Schizophonia: Super-energized electric arrangements of songs learned from Ashkenazi Jewish cantorial recordings of the early 20th century. (The regional record release show for the Schizophonia album (Blue Thread Music) is at Temple University's Feinstein Center in Philadelphia on Thursday May 7th.) We'll contrast-and-compare, listening to the original recordings followed by Schizophonia's amped-up adaptations.

Tal National’s founder, leader and guitarist Almeida (Issoufou Moumine) is also a global ambassador for the non-denominational charitable NGO SOS Childrens’ Villages, which is, in its own words, a ”global federation that works to prevent family breakdown and protect and care for children who have lost parental care, or who risk losing it. (They) work with communities, partners and states to ensure that the rights of all children, in every society, are respected and fulfilled.” To find out more and consider donating or sponsoring a child or a village, visit http://www.sos-childrensvillages.org.

Gracias a la Vida: The Rebel Spirit of Chile’s Legendary Voice - a tribute concert to the late Violeta Parra with Illapu, Colombina Parra and Ana Tijoux, this coming Friday, April 17, 7:30 pm at the Schimmel Center at Pace University, 3 Spruce Street (near the Brooklyn Bridge) in lower Manhattan.

To enter the drawing for a pair of tickets, email me, Rob W, here and please put "TIX" in the subject line. Winners will be notified by noon (NYC time), Monday, April 13 2015.

More about the concert:

Gracias a la Vida is a historic multi-generational tribute to Violeta Parra, the most important singer, songwriter and storyteller in the history of Chile. Parra’s songs of struggle, defiance, and triumph were the basis for Latin America’s “New Song” (Nueva Canción) movement, which had a tremendous influence on music and politics around the world and influenced generations.
This program features Chilean artists whose music is deeply influenced by Parra with styles ranging from nueva canción to rock and pop:
• Illapu, founded in 1971 are well known for their sophisticated interpretations of Andean folklore and rhythms, a fusion that later developed into the “nueva cancion” movement.
• Colombina Violeta Parra Tuca is a niece of Violeta Parra and a singer, songwriter, guitarist and daughter of famed anti-poet Nicanor Parra.
• Ana Tijoux first found acclaim as the female MC of the Chilean hiphop group Makiza, and has established herself on the Spanish-language indie circuit. Tijoux garnered mainstream attention in the U.S. when her single “1977” was featured on the TV series Breaking Bad.

To enter the drawing for a pair of tickets, email me, Rob W, here and please put "TIX" in the subject line. Winners will be notified by noon (NYC time), Monday, April 13 2015.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm Rob W:

Hi dirk and Mdurek, thanks! And good evening everyone!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:55pm Rob W:

Thanks RR, thanks Baz! (Baz and our other further-flung listeners can look out for a Tal National European tour in the near future...)

Avatar 7:32pm Ĩkє:

Gary Sullivan and LAMIN! Very cool fill-ins! And great set by Tal National.
  7:51pm Andy in RI:

This is very cool Yoshi- I am decidedly UN-religious, but this is giving me chills... thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm Philthy woman:

That last song reminded me very much of my Baba's Ukrainian orthodox church music. haunting.
  8:24pm Hel:

Never heard anything like this music before, love the operatic voices. The first song w/ the modern music under the Cantor's voice had progressive elements that reminded me of Norway's Arcturus. Great show, as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm common:

this is goot! hi rob, philthy, everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Rob W:

Thanks everybody! I'm glad some of you are finding this interesting. I'm not religious either but I am intrigued by radical re-interpretations of religious music! Yoshie is one of a number of NY based Jewish-rooted musicians who have been doing this sorta thing. By the way - everyone catch the story about Elvis living upstairs from his grandpa? Could Elvis have been influenced by Jewish cantorial music? Well, maybe not directly... but...
  8:35pm Hel:

Amazing story about Elvis.Thinking even tho' Elvis wasmainly inspiredby African American musicians, I can hear something else in Elvis's vocals- now I know what it is. I'm probably the least religious of anyone here but Yoshi has universal appeal.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm common:

all music is it's own and what people bring to it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm coelacanth:

Hi Rob and All.
yes it's interesting! this piece is especially beautiful to me.
,,,and i listen to gospel & reggae too. relating to the lyrics is sometimes irrelevant! i think the majority of your listeners don't understand some of the languages represented here; but we feel it.
  8:46pm David in Cleveland:

very good show.. man, if I lived in New York I'd go to so many shows!!
  8:49pm TSPer:

Brilliant Rob! My #1 show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Rob W:

Thanks everyone. Well David, truth is, all the possibilities can be a little overwhelming! I don't go to as many shows as some of my FMU peers but I do try to get out there when I can. Looking forward to summer when there are a lot of free outdoor concerts. Thanks everyone for listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm common:

  8:56pm Hel:

I would imagine this music would be fantastic live in a place with great acoustics like St John The Divine cathedral. The old cantors sound much more operatic and eerie than modern cantors but then I've only heard a few modern. Anyway, love the middle eastern and cantorial vocal "acrobatics". Thanks Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm coelacanth:

Thanks Rob
ciao people
