Good morning Scott and all. Damn, I missed Selvhenter. This band was my favorite of last year's Sonic Protest
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:28am
Scott McDowell:

newly discovered for me!
  6:32am
doca:

Morning, Scott! I got to know Selvhenter through some recent Wire issue, never could find it to hear, though
  6:33am
dawid:

Good morning everyone

doca:

They are a collective, I think, lots of releases by its various membera
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35am
Scott McDowell:

Very sweet stuff -- will have to investigate, thanks doca !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:36am
Scott McDowell:

I want to have them come on the show but the states not in their plans at the moment
  6:41am
Mark:

Roscoe's also outrageously good on the new Jack DeJohnette album "Made in Chicago," too, which finally arrived a couple of weeks ago.
  6:41am
doca:

Too bad, a WFMU session would be awesome
  6:42am
Mark:

Very cool of you to play some John Carter/Bobby Bradford, too--not enough people know about them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42am
Scott McDowell:

Yeah I was curious about that one Mark -- thanks for the tip will seek it out
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:42am
Scott McDowell:

yeah doca! someday maybe
  6:44am
doca:

John Carter is one of my favorite jazz players/composer, love his music
  6:46am
doca:

LA has a rich history in the new jazz thing. Ornette developed his sound there, Coltrane spent a little time there too. There's the native scene with Carter, Bradford, and Tapscott, Vinny Golia and 9 winds. I like it, it makes for a less NY-centric narrative
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50am
Scott McDowell:

yes I don't really know the players on this record other than carter/bradford but they're fantastic as well
  6:57am
Mark:

There's a nice disc called "West Coast Hot" that combines their first album and Horace Tapscott's "The Giant Is Awakened" with Anthony Braxton--highly recommended. BTW, the only way to follow them is with some Tom Ze. Or a commercial for Dutch Masters cigars.
  7:01am
doca:

@Scott: Muhal and Threadgill! Stellar line-up.
@Mark: That's true, great album.
  7:02am
Lore:

Self-Determination Music is such a great record, glad it's finally reissued for more to hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03am
Scott McDowell:

Yeah was happily surprised to see the reissue here this morning !
  7:17am
doca:

And the only way to follow Red Trio was with some dub

...appreciating the morning assist Mr. DJ (as ever)...

Mark:

There's an art to putting together sets of disparate styles/genres and not be jarring and annoying with it, and you're very, very good at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40am
Scott McDowell:

that's high praise--- thanks!
  7:42am
Mark:

Well-deserved. That's after several months of pretty consistent listening. You do it week in and week out.
  7:43am
Mark:

Speaking of wrong speeds, did you read the thing that said ALL the Robert Johnson records were mastered at the wrong speed--they're actually a trifle too fast! They're not sure if it was a mistake or if the original issuers were trying to make it more "exciting." I suppose we'll all have to re-buy the "correct" ones now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:50am
Scott McDowell:

it's a good story
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53am
Scott McDowell:

I haven't listened on the correct speed - is it really that different?
  8:09am
Mark:

I haven't heard it. I don't think they've done anything about it yet. I'm sure if there's money to be made re-issuing it again (and there is), then they will.
  8:12am
Mark:

I heard the Doors first album had been re-mastered at the wrong speed, too. The single of "Light My Fire" was the correct speed, but the album was faster. They've since corrected it. I bought one of the correct ones but I haven't listened to it yet. I guess I haven't been into the Doors that much lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16am
Nasty Les:

Great set so far Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17am

This Peter Kerlin Octet track is very nice - kind of reminds me of early Tortoise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18am
Andrew Waterloo:

I was just thinking Tortoise.
