Whatchoo talkin' 'bout, @Jake? Payment links might not have even gone out yet. Ain't nothing wrong with pledging by check or money order. That way FMU doesn't pay CC fees. Actually, all pledges used to be "pay later (by mail)." Paying RIGHT NOW via the web is a fairly new development.

This was one of the tracks that first appeared in the "Star Time" box set. There were a few other tracks from the same concert. Polydor received so many letters begging them to release the entire Paris 1971 show. Several months after the release of "Star Time" our patience was rewarded with the release of "Love Power Peace." Both the box set and the live CD are "must own" releases in my opinion.

@Ike: Well, we can all have a long debate over CC fees/PayPal fees versus the time/cost of processing a piece of paper. Regardless, I paid already thus I am clearly superior to you. Nyeah.

@Ike: No problem. The thing about alternative music is you generally should support it if you are a fan, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that you should like it yourself. Go team!

Ooo! Therese, you got into the B-52s around “Cosmic Thing?” Odd to think that was a first exposure to the B-52s.

What album did you get her to sign, all of them? And do you get a physical copy of her solo album?

But who am I since I only got into the Kinks after hearing “Lola” a few times and Van Halen’s cover of “You Really Got Me.”

Ike:

My high school friends got into the B-52s w/that album too, Jake. But unlike Therese, I don't think they ever worked their way back to the early stuff like "Rock Lobster," which blew my mind the first time I heard it.
  1:11am
JakeGould:

The first time I heard about the B-52s was when I called up one of the neighborhood tough guys who was a friend to this geek. He worked for a scalper and I wanted to score Rush tickets during the “Grace Under Pressure” tour. He blew me off, but got me in direct contact with the scalper. But while we were talking he basically said, “Why do you listen to that junk? You should listen to stuff like this… They’re using a toy piano…” And it was “Dance This Mess Around” over a phone. So exposed to the B-52s and then got in direct contact with a paranoid scalper.

Oh and “this geek” means me. <--

I think "Wolves" would fit nicely into some movie soundtrack.

In the early 90s there was a speed/thrash metal band in Houston called Dead Horse. They covered "Rock Lobster" on their major label debut "Peaceful Death & Pretty Flowers."

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40am
Listener Bryan (the Professor):

Great conversation, which reminded me of high school dances in rural AZ in the mid-80s when we would almost start fights between the few new wavers who would go "down down down" & eventually imitate seizures on the floor during that part of the song -- only to leap back into action when the chorus kicked back in -- and the jocks who wanted to beat us up for being so weird (and for requesting a song they never could wrap their meaty heads around). I think we had to supply our own 45 of the song. So thanks for the memories! Was that "down down down" routine just something we made up or was that widespread on American high school dance floors?
Avatar 1:43am
Mary Wing:

My friends and I would flop down on the floor, too. I think it was a fairly common occurrence among fans.
Avatar 1:44am
Therese:

I remember the "down, down, down" flopping as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46am
Listener Bryan (the Professor):

I think I learned it at orchestra camp. I can't imagine anyone from my hometown could have transmitted it. It felt like secret knowledge -- what you were supposed to do if you knew the song -- but maybe it was just spontaneous. I do remember that it divided the dancefloor, between people who would flop and people who wouldn't. Glad to know you were floppers, Mary & Therese.
  1:46am
JakeGould:

@Mary: Yeah, it was common back then but not really accepted. Still geek culture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47am
Ken From Hyde Park:

I'll plug the motels - www.lazymeadow.com
At the disco I went to, people would get down to knee level but not flopping. The dance floor was too crowded.

  2:05am
JakeGould:

Also, just so people have perspective on how “weird” the 1980s were… Fred Schneider—if I recall correctly—went out of his way to attack any journalist who implied he was gay. Think about that for a second. Whole other world/era.

At 2:45:35, there's a song after "Soft Collection" and before Therese's break that's not shown in the playlist. It's very Stone Roses sounding and Google/Bing fails when I looked up the lyrics. Delving into Nic Hessler's album, however, I found that it's a hidden bonus track titled "Disappear". FYI.
