Tal National in Concert: Electrifying Rock and Roots from Niger

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Thanks everyone for your incredible support during our successful fundraising Marathon!

Niger's roots rock powerhouse Tal National is a culturally diverse band, with members from Niger's Songhai, Fulani, Hausa, and Tuareg populations. The band transforms elements from all those traditions into high energy electric dance music, driven by hypnotic and cathartic guitar-led workouts. Tal National blew away audiences during its North American debut tour in 2013.

The band is back on tour in North America now supporting an excellent new LP, Zoy Zoy (FatCat Records) - with stops at at Pace University's Schimmel Center on Thursday April 2nd and at the Falcon in Marlboro, NY on Friday April 3rd. We get a taste of Tal National's awesome powers tonight with highlights from a rousing October 2013 show at the Mercury Lounge.

I so wish I could go to the April 28th show. Chhom Nimol should be awesome singing Ros Sereysothea songs, judging from the covers I heard her perform with Dengue Fever
Avatar 6:10pm Julie:

this song is so pretty
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Rob W:

Well there are also the City Winery shows April 24 if you're in NY Fred (I'll actually be away but back in time for April 28 - I will also air the recording and video on my show Sat May 2.)
Avatar 6:11pm Julie:

she toured with Jane Birkin, wow what a bill
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm Rob W:

Thanks Julie!

Hi Rob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm fred:

I'm in France, but that May 2 airing is great news! Will it be archived? I'll stay up otherwise, but I'd rather be able to blast it loud instead
Avatar 🌍 Swag For Life Member 6:16pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Holy gosh, The Falcon is across the Hudson R. and about 15 miles from my house. I need to get over there on Friday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm Rob W:

Yes Ken from Hyde Park, you should go! Bring your friends! And curious for a scene report... I haven't been to the Falcon but they're doing good stuff there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm Rob W:

Ah yes, France, forgot your were there... a bit far Fred... but yes, the Cambodian show at Monty Hall will be archived, at least as a streaming archive. The video probably will stay online for at least a little while too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:24pm fred:

I'm usually an archive only listener, no wonder you don't know where I'm from (we're switching to DST tonight, so I'll be back to archives)
Rob, I just saw a pretty nice female trio from Benin called Teriba. Voice and percussion, a bit smooth but nice. A word of warning if they come your way: they like to bring members of the audience on stage to dance. Seat near or far from the aisles accordingly

Greetings, folks!
  6:46pm Kris:

this is paradise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Rob W:

Thanks Fred for the tip on Teriba! And well I always feel a little guilty at shows because so much the music I'm into really is dance music and I too tend to avoid the action...!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:11pm Rob Weisberg:

Thanks Kris. And ░Ī Ҡ ℰ░:: - I see you've upped your (typographic) game!
Avatar 7:18pm sos:
