  4:09pm
G:

Supposedly "psychobilly" in the Cash song lyrics is the first recorded use of what later became a music genre term
  4:10pm
Dean:

It's a song, alright, but I had to search for it to figure out the performing artists, because the version I know is on a Kidz Bop release. And it's a noun. "I've got the moves like Jagger."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm

i just had a psycobilly freak-out last week...just admitted it to my friend.

Irwin, I believe "One Piece at A Time" is the name of the album, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Irwin:

Good enuff for me, Mark.
  4:15pm
Dean:

So "One Piece at a Time" was released in 1976. Meanwhile, OED's first recorded use of the term is from a 1978 NME article: "The Cramps..have moulded for themselves a high maverick style... As I later discovered, its given name is psychotic punkabilly, or psychobilly for short." I'm guessing OED overlooked Cash, because they tend not to look to song lyrics for warrant to include new entries.
  4:15pm
G:

@Mark: Wiki article on One Piece says it was cash's last no 1 charting hit on country chart
Avatar 4:17pm
V Priceless:

Great Alice Cooper track! Woo!
  4:18pm
G:

You can submit antedatings to OED online, they are always happy for that. They're still adding antedatings from the 1600s, and treeware OED1 was finished in the 1930s. A lexicographer's work is never done...
  4:22pm
Dean:

@G: Totally cool. I read Murray's granddaughter's history of OED, "Caught in the Web of Words" back in the late '80s. I'll look into submitting the Cash (rather, Kemp) lyrics. It'd be nice to find them in print, though.
  4:25pm
Listener Robert:

You still trying to use up those WFMU miracle soap bars? I offered my liquid, developed as non-irritating bubble bath, in gallon jugs, but Ken said you don't have liquid soap dispensers refillable from jugs, even in the kitchen. No fragrance, though, just smells soapy.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
coelacanth:

(before they went on stage, that is.)
  4:28pm
G:

@Dean -- i don't believe they're ever going to do another print OED. It's being continuously updated as a database and online since the 00s...
  4:28pm
Listener Robert:

The chamomile-lavender scent aside, I think the base oil weapons fans would have their soap made from would be the rendered fat of their enemies!
  4:30pm
Dean:

@G: Of course. I didn't mean OED in print. I meant the Kemp lyrics as a basis for inclusion. This is one of the reasons I suspect OED traditionally hasn't relied on lyrics per se, i.e., as opposed to poetry. The latter appears in print more predictably than the former.
  4:30pm
G:

@Dean -- One of my undergrad profs gave that Murray book to me as a graduation gift in 79, when it was new. Olden times lol. Still a very solid book!

  4:32pm

They'll take lyrics, for sure, as long as the date is documented, which it clearly is. It's got to be written, and clearly dateable, is all :) Nobody likes "undateable" haha
  4:33pm
Dean:

@G: I haven't read the later Winchester books. Nor, for that matter, have I read OED's own history of itself! http://public.oed.com/history-of-the-oed/
  4:35pm
G:

I wrote the short bio of another dictionary maker from that period, and the Murray book is just fine :)

My first trip up the Saginaw River,
My first time to the Canada shore,
There I met Rosie O'Grady,
Better known as th Winnipeg Whore.

"Come right in, I'm glad to see you,
Slap your ass across my knee,
And we'll have some fun together,
Dollar and a half will be my fee."

Some were dancin', some were prancin',
Some lay drunk on the barroom floor,
But there I was in the northeast corner,
Screwin' the hell out of the Winnipeg Whore.

Then, in there walked some sons 'a' bitches,
Must have been a score or more,
Oughta seen me shit my britches,
Slidin' my ass out the whorehouse door.
