I love this piece--the really amazing thing is that Carlos did a version of "Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary" by Henry Purcell--the music to this is actually over 300 years old.

@Matt: it's a quintessentially English-sounding piece, so doing a squiggly synth arrangement neatly suggested the milieu of the book, an England of the future that's still truly English, but all dystopian and shit

*The* quintessential Status Quo song to me. Never knew what "pictures of matchstick men" is supposed to mean, but love these psych riffs.

Avatar 1:12am

@P-90: several months back, 3 UK girls were caught on the border on their way to "meet their new cute boyfriends in Iraq". Of course, it gets even darker because any girls that end up with ISIS are used as sex slaves and passed around as gifts for fighters (that's how they lure the guys to join). ISIS also buys kidnapped girls (like some of the ones Boko Haram kidnapped) for the same purposes. Ugh.

@Danne: true, and will give the winner the chance to see the "tipsy on airplane booze" version of the DJs until the "totally wasted at the end of a long festival day" version hits them. Of course, probably a bit more expensive than a plane trip from the UK or Germany or somewhere to Spain.
Avatar 1:32am
Matt from Springfield:

@Jake: I once suggested as a route to prog for WFMU "indie" listeners: go from Nick Drake, to Fairport Convention, to Steeleye Span, to Mike Oldfield and points beyond. So your observation certainly strikes an underlying element.
  1:34am
P-90:

Don't forget Renaissance, the third leg of the tripod with Fairport and Steeleye...
  1:35am
JakeGould:

@Matt: Not a bad idea, but I’ll explain my relationship to prog rock like this… While I knew some friends growing up in the late-1970s/early-1980s who dealt with puberty by playing Dungeons & Dragons, I became OCD about “Rush” during those awkward years. So to me, it’s all a phase… Clay’s passion for it I admire, but the music itself is crap.

@Matt: I was more OCD about “Rush” in a fanboy way when I first listened to them as an awkward teen. I still can listen to some of their stuff, but to me it’s a vestige of the past and a surge or hormones and acne.

Almost a "Lou Zappa" tune

I was kiddin' Julie :) But I haven't heard of The Bells, have you ever played anything else from this?
Avatar 🦇 1:42am
Julie:

Nope first time

JakeGould:

Prog rock always sounds like some magical wizard’s fantasy world and the music is just some “hook” to get you to believe there is more depth there than there is. Disco… Disco Mystic… Disco… Disco Mystic… Disco… Disco Mystic… Disco… Disco Mystic… Disco… Disco Mystic… And Lou Reed could lay a few turds it seems.

Guido from Cologne:

The Bells is a weaker attempt to follow the Bowie & Iggy Berlin records. If I remember right it is recorded at Can Studios (Inner Space) by Can technican Rene Tinner.
Avatar 1:43am
Matt from Springfield:

@P-90: Indeed! That one would have a spoken monologue in the middle verging into "Bobby Brown"/"Joe's Garage" territory...

the moroder thing was so believable

Great expertise on Lou when we needed it, thanks Guido!

@Matt: yep, the funeral procession yesterday was already fun, with actual old-timey armour on guys on horseback. Here's hoping that continues at the actual funeral.
  1:45am
P-90:

TZAG Guido! Thanks for the background, now I'm curious to hear more of The Bells.
  1:46am
JakeGould:

The Osmonds seem to have passed by someone smoking jazz cigarettes when they came up with this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47am
Guido from Cologne:

Nevertheless "The Bells" got warm reviews in in German music press at the time.

Lou's reputation wasn't very good over here in 1979. Erratic behaviour on stage. promoter Fritz Rau was quoted "This guy doesn't belong to any stage in the world".
  1:48am
JakeGould:

@Guido: I can easily see a pompous “respect” for Lou Reed killing his song writing on “The Bells.”
Avatar 🦇 1:49am
Julie:

@Jake The Plan and Crazy Horses have all sorts of weird psychedelic attempts on them
  1:49am
P-90:

Being Lou Reed at the peak of the Disco era couldn't have been much fun.

Guido from Cologne:

I guess for drug problems or something. He was reported fist fight with audience, etc.. Velvet Underground was all but forgotten in most part of continental Europe and just about to be re-discovered. All the people wanted to hear was "Wild Side".
  1:52am
JakeGould:

@Julie: Key word is “attempts.” It’s someone gave the Osmonds a Pepsi, then some Chamomile tea followed by nutmeg and then they went “nuts.”

@Julie: Their Wiki page has a recent picture of them with Carole K. and Carole Bayer Sager - I'm surprised they're still together, out of all those Brill Building "couples" teams back in the day, everyone else split long ago.

I think they weren't in the Brill Building, unless they changed that for the play. There was a line, "This ain't the Brill building." Don Kirschner was there
