Ghazals for Valentines Day: South Asian song-poems of devotion, with Kiran Ahluwalia

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

These days the accomplished India-born, Canada-raised, NYC-based vocalist Kiran Ahluwalia, two-time winner of a coveted Juno Award for music in Canada, really does her own thing musically. She writes original material in a range of styles and collaborates with artists like Mali's Tinariwen.

But early in her career Kiran specialized in interpreting ghazals, ancient and modern poems known for blurring the line between romantic and spiritual devotion.

So for a Valentine's day treat, we asked Kiran to bring in some favorite recorded ghazals and other South Asian romantic songs.

Plus we'll hear songs from her latest album Sanata - many of which she'll perform at her only New York concert of the season, Saturday night February 21st at Roulette in downtown Brooklyn.

TICKET GIVEAWAY!

I have two pairs of tickets available to see tonight’s guest Kiran Ahluwalia and her all-star band - featuring jazz guitarist Rez Abbasi, Nitin Mitta (tabla); Will Holshouser (accordion); and Mamadou Ba (electric bass) - in concert at Roulette, 509 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn one week from tonight, Saturday February 21 at 8 pm.

To enter the drawing for a pair of tickets, email me, Rob W, here and please put "TIX" in the subject line.

The deadline to enter is midnight, Sunday February 15 2015.
Winners will be notified by Monday at noon.
